Early life
Pauling was born in Portland, Oregon . His father, an unsuccessful druggist, moved his family to a number of different cities in Oregon from to , finally returning to Portland that year. When the elder Pauling died in of a perforated ulcer , Linus' mother was left to care for him and two younger siblings. Pauling was a voracious reader as a child, and at one point his father wrote a letter to a local paper inviting suggestions of additional books that would occupy his time. A friend, Lloyd Jeffress, had a small chemistry laboratory in his bedroom when Pauling was in grammar school , and Jeffress' laboratory experiments inspired Pauling to plan to become a chemical engineer In high school, Pauling continued to experiment in chemistry, borrowing much of the equipment and materials from an abandoned steel company near which his grandfather worked as a night watchman.

Full Text In the highest sense of the word, all great scientists are great teachers: we live by the lessons they have taught. But by no means all great scientist are great teachers in the more prosaic sense of the term. Linus Pauling was a glorious exception. He taught superbly at all levels. As a lecturer he was peerless, whether the audience were professional or lay, young or old, friendly or unfriendly. In many ways he was an actor manque: the oddly cadenced speech, the mastery of the vivid phrase, the extravagant gesture, the dramatic pause, and the mesmerizing ability to pull numbers out of a hat and to conjure up images of atoms in space. As an author he covered an immense range, Structure of Line Spectra, Introduction to Quantum Mechanics, The Nature of the Chemical Bond, General Chemistry, College Chemistry, The Architecture of Molecules, No More War, Vitamin C and the Common Cold, How to Live Longer and Feel Better

Widely acknowledged as one of the greatest scientists ever, Linus Pauling was nevertheless a very controversial and outspoken person. In fact it was this very facet of his personality that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize, for his stance against nuclear weapons. Due to his forthright nature, he was labelled a communist, forced to defend himself before two Congressional Committees, risked his job, and even had his passport revoked, so that he could not travel abroad. Linus Carl Pauling was born on 28th February 1901, and his father died when he was nine years old, forcing him to take up odd jobs to support his mother, sisters, as well as pay for his education. Even at this early age the controversial side of Linus Pauling's nature showed up, when he refused to take a class in civics which was needed in order to obtain a High School Diploma, contending that he had already read up about civics. He was finally awarded the diploma after he received his second Nobel Prize, the 1962 Peace Award, and the authorities finally accepted his viewpoint. Having obtained his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the Oregon Agricultural College, he joined the California Institute of Technology, to complete his PhD in Chemistry. He began working on crystals, and was criticised by many for deciding on what the structure was and then fitting the data in to suit his findings. This intuitive approach to research was not appreciated as throughout his career, Pauling would frequently reach his conclusions without sufficient data.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Linus Carl Pauling The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1954 Linus Carl Pauling was born in Portland, Oregon, on February 28, 1901, the son of a druggist, Herman Henry William Pauling and his wife, Lucy Isabelle Darling. Linus attended the public elementary and high schools in the town of Condon and the city of Portland, Oregon, and entered the Oregon State College in 1917, receiving the degree of B.Sc. in chemical engineering in 1922. Since 1919 his interest lay in the field of molecular structure and the nature of the chemical bond, inspired by papers by Irving Langmuir on the application of the Lewis theory of the sharing of the pairs of electrons between atoms to many substances. In 1921 he suggested, and attempted to carry out, an experiment on the orientation of iron atoms by a magnetic field and the determination of the orientation of the iron crystallises by polishing and etching the deposit, and microscopic examination of the etch figures. With Professor Dickinson, he began in 1922 the experimental determination of the structures of some crystals, and also started theoretical work on the nature of the chemical bond. Pauling married Ava Helen Miller in 1923. They have four children, Linus Carl Jr., Peter Jeffress, Linda Helen, and Edward Crellin, and thirteen grandchildren.
