LINUS PAULING
A Biography
Linus Pauling was born with twin legacies. Although his parents could give him very little in the way of material wealth, they did give him the better gift of great intelligence. His brilliant mind eventually provided him with financial security as well as his greatest happiness. It can also be argued that this gift of intelligence was responsible for the controversy that seemed to surround everything he did and everything he wrote. He made great intuitive leaps and was frequently criticized for the conclusions he drew from what some felt was too little experimentation, often outside of Pauling's area of expertise. When he had graduated with his degree in chemical engineering, his mother again began pressuring him to stop his education and make money, perhaps become a secondary school teacher. Pauling, however, had applied to graduate schools at Harvard, Berkeley and the fairly new California Institute of Technology. His first choice was Berkeley because G.N. Lewis himself was the chair of the chemistry department, but Berkeley was too slow in replying to his application. Harvard didn't really interest him much, so his decision was made in favor of Cal. Tech. One year after begining work at Cal. Tech. he married Ava Helen Miller. In 1931 Pauling was awarded the Langmuir Prize of the American Chemical Society for "the most noteworthy work in pure science done by a man under 30 years of age." In the same year he was offered a joint full professorship in both chemistry and physics at the Massachusetts Institute Of Technology. He seriously considered the offer but he didn't want to have to brave the Massachusetts' winters. He ended up by accepting the position for one year only. In 1933 he was made a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He was 32, the youngest appointment to this body ever made.

His main contributions were to the understanding of molecular structure and chemical bonding ( see Molecule Chemical Reactions ). Pauling is one of the few people to have been awarded two Nobel Prizes : He received the 1954 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work on forces between molecules, and the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on ending the testing of nuclear weapons. Throughout his career, Pauling demonstrated intuition, inspiration, and a phenomenal memory. He often applied principles from one field of science to another. Pauling was born in Portland, Oregon. He began his scientific studies at Oregon Agricultural College in Corvallis (now known as

According to the site, it is also designed to "serve as a primary reference point for individuals interested in the history of DNA - both researchers and lay people alike". Features include a thirty-four page narrative with generous use of images; primary material including "over three hundred letters, manuscripts, photographs, published papers, audio-visual snippets and more"; and a chronology of his life between 1952 and 1953 utilising an interactive calendar. Linus Pauling research notebooks This site makes available digitised versions of 46 notebooks written by the chemist Linus Pauling, between 1922 and 1994. The notebooks were digitised from the original copies held at Oregon State University's Valley Library. They cover a multitude of topics, reflecting Pauling's work and research interests, including his researches into mental illness, the common cold and influenza and cancer, and his nutritional research on vitamins. Each page of each notebook is available as a digitised image which may be enlarged along with some brief descriptive text of the entries on the page. The text of the notebooks cannot not be searched, although there is a subject index which may be browsed and which provides links to appropriate pages.

He was among the first to apply the quantum theory to calculations of molecular structures; his book The Nature of the Chemical Bond (1939, 3d ed. 1960) is still the classic in the field. He developed the concept of resonance to explain covalent bonds in certain organic compounds (see chemical bond ). His later work concerned molecular biology; using physical techniques, he determined the three-dimensional structures of many antitoxins, amino acids, and proteins. He was the first recipient of two honors awarded by the American Chemical Society: the Langmuir prize (1931) and the Lewis medal (1951). Outside of his scientific work, Pauling took a vital interest in public affairs, especially the movement for world disarmament. His No More War See T. Hager

LINUS CARL PAULING was born in Portland, Oregon, on February 28, 1901, and died at his ranch at Big Sur, California, on August 19, 1994. In 1922 he married Ava Helen Miller (died 1981), who bore him four children: Linus Carl, Peter Jeffress, Linda Helen (Kamb), and Edward Crellin. EARLY YEARS Pauling was the first child of Herman Pauling, son of German immigrants, and Lucy Isabelle (Darling) Pauling, descended from pre-revolutionary Irish stock. There were two younger daughters: Pauline Darling (born 1902) and Lucile (born 1904). Herman Pauling worked for a time as a traveling salesman for a medical supply company and moved in 1905 to Condon, Oregon, where he opened his own drugstore. It was in this new boom town in the arid country east of the coastal range that Pauling had his first schooling. He learned to read early and started to devour books. In 1910 the family moved back to Portland, where his father wrote a letter to The Oregonian , a local newspaper, asking for advice about suitable reading matter for his nine-year-old son, who had already read the Bible and Darwin's theory of evolution. We do not know the replies, but Pauling later confessed that one of his favorites was the

Linus Pauling On August 19, 1994, the world lost one of its greatest scientists and humanitarians and a much respected and beloved defender of civil liberties and health. Dr. Linus Pauling, who was 93 years old, died at his ranch near Big Sur, on the California coast. A memorial service was held at Stanford Memorial Church in Palo Alto on August 29. In addition to the general recognition as one of the two greatest scientists of the 20th century, he was usually acknowledged by his colleagues as the most influential chemist since Lavoisier, the 18th-centruy founder of the modern science of chemistry. His introductory textbook General Chemistry, revised three times since its first printing in 1947 and translated into 13 languages, has been used by generations of undergraduates. After Pauling entered the field of chemistry as a professional in the mid-1920s, his work, grounded in physics, has affected the work of every chemist. He is also often considered the founding father of molecular biology, which has transformed the biological sciences and medicine and provided the base for biotechnology.
