At it's simplest level spending too much time in front of the monitor, and insufficient time on a relationship, can undermine the closeness, build barriers, and lead into problems that are increasingly difficult to deal with. At it's worst, the net can be a source of erotic fantasy, pornography, illicit relationships, cyber-affairs, and ultimately the destruction of a normal healthy marriage. Internet addicts 'need help'

Surf's up - but do you spend too long online?
Internet addiction is a growing problem and doctors should be better equipped to deal with it, research from the Center for Online Addiction suggests. It claims that people are spending an increasing amount of time online and then lie about it to hide their activities. In a paper to be published in the student edition of the British Medical Journal, Dr Kimberly Young, director of the centre, sets out a series of questions she says determine whether or not someone is an Internet addict. However, other psychologists working in the same field say that her criteria are too wide ranging to provide a useful definition. Self-test reveals all Dr Young said that an Internet addict would answer yes to at least five of the following questions:
  • Do you feel preoccupied with the Internet (you think about your previous online activity or anticipate your next session)?
  • Do you feel the need to use the Internet with increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction?

Phone: 541 388-5660 A summary of this article was published in "The Source", July, 2001 Over 130,000,000 Americans are on-line. About 46,000 more people are getting on-line each day. Americans are going on-line looking for information, entertainment and relationships. Use of the Internet (also called the Net) has grown faster than any technology in history including the telephone, television, computers, video games and CD players. The Net provides everyday users with primarily the Web, e-mail, instant messaging, live chat and the ability to purchase goods and services on-line. "You’ve Got Mail…" I Don’t Care. "Do you want to know more?" Nope! "Do you want to see a picture of a naked man?" Of course not!! "Do you want to see a picture of young boy having sex with an older woman?" Not on your life!!!

Lost in Cyberspace
Do you know someone who logs on-line so frequently that they are in danger of becoming lost in cyberspace? And how much is too much? Is excessive computer use unhealthy? There are plenty of anecdotes of people who appear to be "addicted" to on-line games, the web, as well as instant messaging. The term "internet addiction disorder" was first coined as a tongue-in-cheek parody of symptoms proposed by Dr. Ivan Goldberg on the web in 1997. Once discovered, his media-bite became front page news. The mental health community has continued to debate whether it actually exists as a disorder at all, and empirical research from truly representative samples, rather than on-line studies ;-) has been slow to follow. Is it a disorder, like pathological gambling? If so, why not talk about a TV addiction disorder? Or a telephone addiction disorder? How about a technology addiction disorder? Should we only examine excessive use or should we examine what the use is for? Others are arguing that there is no "internet addiction," but want to specify that it is defined by the activity that is addicting on the internet, such as a "sex/pornography addiction" or a "Star Trek chat room addiction" (Holmes, 1997). Others are saying that being hooked on the internet is akin to a disorder of impulse control, similar to kleptomania or compulsive shopping (Shapira, 1998). So shall we call it "internetomania"? Well, enough of the debate. Whatever you call it, I'm sure you do know a fellow roommate, friend or acquaintance whose time spent on-line is, shall we say, excessive if not close to pathological.

SELF-HELP: Internet Addiction
Getting Caught in the 'Net
It is 3:30 a.m..
You've been staring into the computer screen since you got home at 5. Or was that yesterday?...
You're English paper is due at 10, but the teacher "won't mind" if you turn it in on Monday. You started the semester off well, but your grades in the class are slipping. In fact all your grades are falling, just like last semester.
You should go to sleep, but Pat may show up again in the chat room. Pat seems to be the only one who understands you these days. Or maybe you'll just surf the 'Net for awhile and check in later. Does this sound familiar? Do you seem to be spending more and more time online, getting less work done, becoming more involved with cyberfriends than flesh-and-blood ones? You may be getting "caught in the 'Net." Many people find it hard to believe that using the computer can be a problem for them. It helps you be productive, it's entertaining, it's interesting; but addictive? Studies have shown that an increasing number of students go beyond functional use of computers and the 'Net to the point of failing courses, losing jobs, damaging relationships, and even flunking out of school altogether. And these are not just "marginal" students; high-achieving students are just as susceptible, perhaps more susceptible. Using the internet is like other potentially compulsive activities, such as gambling, exercise

Internet addicts sent home from Finnish military
By Ashlee Vance in Chicago Published Tuesday 3rd August 2004 20:15 GMT It used to take a bum leg or a penchant for same sex love to get out of the army. These days, however, young Fins are using Internet addiction as a means of avoiding required military service. Finnish "packet poppers" sent off for service have exhibited painful longing for their PCs - a longing so profound that military doctors have become concerned for the youngsters' condition. The Finnish Defense Forces, showing their kind hearts, have decided to excuse IP addicts from their six months duty all together, according to a report from Reuters "For people who play (Internet) games all night and don't have any friends, don't have any hobbies, to come into the army is a very big shock," Commander-Captain Jyrki Kivela at the military conscription unit told the news service. "Some of (the conscripts) go to the doctor and say they can't stay. Sometimes, the doctors have said they have an Internet addiction."

The Internet has affected Chinese society in a number of ways. Like in other countries, some people have developed probems with the technology. A Bejing clinic has opened to treat Internet addiction in China.
An AP article quotes the clinic's director, Dr. Tao Ran as stating that "All the children here have left school because they are playing games or in chat rooms everyday. They are suffering from depression, nervousness, fear and unwillingness to interact with others, panic and agitation. They also have sleep disorders, the shakes and numbness in their hands."

They usually stay 10 to 15 days at China's first officially licensed clinic for Internet addiction . At $48 a day, the treatments carry a high price in China, where the average city dweller's weekly income is just $20." We've covered how people absolutely love to call various things "addictions" when there's little actual evidence of addiction . Again, this looks like yet another story making the "risk" seem much worse than it is (while hyping up a few psychologists who make money off trying to cure such "addicts.") Still, it seems like treating "internet addiction" is treating a symptom, not the real problem for those who really have withdrawn so much that they can't live without their connection. It's likely that it's indicative of something more serious than the fact that they like to have internet access. Deseret News staff writer
The daylong conference, "Breaking Free: Shaking Off the Chains of Addiction," sponsored by Women's Services and Resources, explored addictions ranging from eating disorders and prescription drug dependencies to cybersex.
Reid, a psychologist, leads a sex offender program at the Utah State Prison and has a Web site that deals with Internet safety.
The Internet is neither good nor bad but becomes addictive when it "affects other areas of your life," Reid said. The time one spends surfing the Net is one of the trade-offs, he said. Others could include sacrifices of work, school, family relationships and finances. Reputations can be damaged or destroyed through cybersex, he said.
Getting fully hooked on the Internet can take as little as six months, he said.
The most popular sites are chat rooms, taking up to 35 percent of the time time people spend on the Net. News groups occupy 15 percent of people's time the time on the Net. Surfing the World Wide Web takes up 7 percent of the time spent on the Internet, while doing research and gathering information involves only 2 percent, he said.
The lure of the chat rooms, he said, is in their anonymity, interaction and affordability. The Web has created opportunities for amateur pornographers, who have frustrated professional pornographers, he said.

    Description
Internet addiction is as real, and as serious, as any other form of addiction. Just like drugs or alcohol, the Internet can offer an escape from the real world and its problems. It's really easy for a five-minute Web-surfing session to turn into a three-hour waste of time. Using the Internet means being responsible about your time and how you use it. Watch out for the warning signs:
    • You're just going to be online for a few minutes, but instead you surf for hours. You avoid work deadlines by surfing the Web. You skip real-life social activities in favor of online chats. You spend all your spare time "surfing" for pornography.
