The day has come when internet dating is considered a legitimate way of meeting new people in the endless search for the right person. Chat rooms have replaced bar rooms, and dating sites and personal ads no longer have the "stigma" that they once did. You may still get a raised eyebrow when telling people you are using the internet for your search for the perfect mate, but no where close to the reaction you would have gotten years ago. Internet dating has gained popularity by leaps and bounds, and unfortunately, so have the dangers and horror stories some have encountered. The anonymity of internet dating has afforded con artists a new playground for scams, and has allowed people to be anyone they think you want them to be because they are engaging you primarily through the written word. This site is not meant to bring forth the message that its impossible to find love through internet dating, but to inform people of the dangers that are out there. Internet dating is still a relatively new way of people connecting with people from all over the globe, and people need to understand the dangers out there so they can make their search a safe one. Included in this site or stories from those that have been there, and are willing to share their experiences with others in an effort to educate people and learn from their mistakes. Study: Internet 'addicts' often show other disorders
May 31, 1998
Web posted at: 11:14 p.m. EDT (0314 GMT) (AP) People who seem addicted to the Internet often show a bumper crop of psychiatric disorders like manic-depression, and treating those other conditions might help them rein in their urge to be online, a study suggests. On average, Internet "addicts" in the study reported having five psychiatric disorders at some point in their lives, a finding that "just blew me away," said psychiatrist Nathan Shapira of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. It's unclear whether the Internet problem should be considered a disorder or just a symptom of something else, or whether certain disorders promote excessive online use, he said. Shapira is scheduled to present the study Monday at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in Toronto.

  • A demonstrated "loss of control" when trying to stop or limit the amount of time on the computer. (Breaking promises to self or others. Promising to quit or cut down and not being able to do so) Being dishonest or minimizing the extent of the time you stay on the computer, or covering up or being dishonest about what activities you participate in when on the computer. Negative consequences experienced by the computer user or his/her friends or family as a direct result of time or activities spent on the computer. Participation in high risk or normally unacceptable behaviors when using the computer. Compromising your morals and values based on the opportunity to remain anonymous and protected on the computer. (a good test for this is to ask yourself if your spouse, partner or family would approve of what you were doing on the computer) An overdeveloped sense of importance for the computer in ones life. Defending your right to use the computer as much as desired, regardless of the fact that people in your life are feeling left out and neglected. International Conference: 25-27 March 1998, Bristol, UK
    IRISS '98: Conference Papers
Proceedings Title: Does Internet and Computer 'Addiction' Exist? : Some Case Study Evidence Author: Mark Griffiths
    Abstract
It has been alleged that social pathologies are beginning to surface in cyberspace, i.e. technological addictions. To date there is very little empirical evidence that computing activities (i.e. internet use, hacking, programming) are addictive. Anecdotal evidence indicates that the typical 'addict' is a teenager, usually male, with little or no social life and little or no self confidence. This paper concentrates on five case studies of excessive computer usage. It is argued that of the five cases, only two of them are possibly 'addicted' using addiction components criteria. The excessive usage in the majority of cases was purely symptomatic and was where the internet/computer was used to counteract other deficiencies.
Does Internet and Computer 'Addiction' Exist? : Some Case Study Evidence
It has been alleged that social pathologies are beginning to surface in cyberspace, i.e. technological addictions (Griffiths, 1996a; 1997). Technological addictions are operationally defined as non-chemical (behavioural) addictions which involve human-machine interaction. They can either be passive (e.g. television) or active (e.g. computer games) and usually contain inducing and reinforcing features which may contribute to the promotion of addictive tendencies (Griffiths, 1995). This author's view is that technological addictions are a subset of behaviourial addictions (Marks, 1990) and that behaviourial addictions feature the core components of addiction, i.e., salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict and relapse (see Griffiths, 1996b). These core components are expanded upon below :
