The Abbey Theatre and Cultural Life Part 1: The W. A. Henderson Scrapbooks, 1899-1911 .  5 reels. Film 2848. "W.A. Henderson was an aspiring journalist closely associated with the Irish literary revival. As a secretary of the National Literary Society of Dublin for over 15 years, he was in contact with all of the central figures, events and trends of the Irish theatre.  Included are his collections of press cuttings, photographs, and other literary documents. The Playboy and What He Did records in minute detail the notorious riots at the Abbey Theatre's opening night of Synge's Playboy of the Western World. A wide range of papers chronicling the Abbey's history in the early years of the century includes 1904-07: The Irish National Theatre Movement.  In addition, all of the volumes in this collection contain manuscript notes by Henderson and most have Henderson's own manuscript index."  (Toronto) Guide: [The W. Exhibition curator: Katie Sambrook The Holy Bible . Cambridge: printed by John Hayes, 1674. [Rare Books Collection FOL. BS185.C74] Unusually, the early ownership history of this copy of the King James Bible has been fully documented. As the lengthy inscription on the front endpaper explains, it was purchased by the eminent Puritan divine and author of The saints' everlasting rest , Richard Baxter (1615-1691) with money from a legacy made to Baxter by Matthew Hale (1609-1676), Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench and a prominent legal historian. The inscription, which appears to be in Baxter's hand, eulogises Hale, "This man so Wise, so Good, so Great". Baxter bought the Bible as a memorial to his friendship with Hale and inserted an engraved portrait of Hale opposite the title-page. Despite his Puritan sympathies, Baxter had not suffered at the Restoration, perhaps in part because of Hale's support and friendship. He was to fare less well with a later member of the judiciary, Judge Jeffreys, who had him imprisoned in the King's Bench prison in 1685. Part of Richard Baxter's eulogy for Matthew Hale: The Holy Bible . Cambridge: printed by John Hayes, 1674. [Rare Books Collection FOL. BS185.C74]

On this day in 1775 Richard Brinsley Sheridan's The Rivals premiered. Sheridan was just twenty-three years old, this was his first play, and his Mrs. Malaprop may have borrowed from Henry Fielding's Mrs. Slipslop, but the stage and the language got one of its most enjoyable and enduring creations not to mention "a nice derangement of epitaphs." Drury Lane, Sheridan Go Out
On this day in 1809 London's Drury Lane Theatre burned down; when those watching the spectacle from a nearby pub with theater owner-parliamentarian Richard Brinsley Sheridan remarked on his composure, he famously responded, "A man may surely take a glass of wine by his own fireside." One-liners aside, Sheridan was most famous in his later years for a five-hour parliamentary speech which brought both sides of the House down. Richard Sheridan's School for Scandal In The School for Scandal Sheridan aimed to lampoon the general hypocrisy of the time, and portray his Joseph Surface and Lady Sneerwell as types. That a contemporary politician saw himself specifically targeted, and demanded that the play be cancelled, is another way of saying that Sheridan's masterpiece has been popular for well over two centuries, and will likely remain so.

Father: Thomas Sheridan Mother: Elizabeth MacFadden Notes:
Elizabeth is a candidate for the "Miss Sheridan" of County Cavan who married Thomas Smyth in 1750. Rhodes writes that "Elizabeth was a firm believer in the 'Banshi, or female daemon attached to certain ancient Irish families.' She seriously maintained that the Banshi of the Sheridan family was heard wailing beneath the windows of Quilca before the news arrived from France of the death of Frances Sheridan at Blois. Her niece made her very angry by observing that as Mrs. Sheridan was by birth a Chamberlaine, a family of English extraction, she had no right to the guardianship of an Irish fairy, and therefore the Banshi had made a mistake."!
