Richard Brinsley Sheridan School for Scandal Manuscript, 97 pages, late eighteenth or early nineteenth century Late in the eighteenth century, Sheridan told a publisher who asked for a corrected copy of School for Scandal, that after nineteen years he was still not satisfied with the text. Whether he ever completed a definitive text is not known, but he may have continued to work on the play as late as 1815. This late version, although not complete, shows some significant changes from an earlier one that has long been accepted as the basic text. The manuscript is in five hands: one appears to be either that of John Palmer (1742?-1798), the original performer of Joseph Surface, the hypocritical brother in this popular comedy, or, according to some scholars, that of George Steevens (1736-1800), the commentator on Shakespeare and collaborator with Samuel Johnson. The Rivals, August 26 to October 19, 2003 ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) may be the only Englishman who had a distinguished career as both a playwright and politician. He was born in Dublin, Ireland. Sheridan's father was an actor and teacher of oratory; his mother wrote sentimental novels and satirical comedies. His grandfather, Thomas Sheridan, was an Irish clergyman and scholar called "the best instructor of youth in these kingdoms" by his friend Jonathan Swift, who wrote Gulliver's Travels in Thomas' home. At age 11, Sheridan was sent away to be schooled at Harrow. His father's debts forced the family to move from Dublin to France. By 1770, Sheridan had rejoined his family in the stylish resort of Bath, teaching at his father's new Academy of Oratory. He eloped with "the toast of Bath," the singer Elizabeth Linley, and fought two duels with her over-aggressive suitors. They settled in London in 1774 where the now properly married couple began to circulate in high society. To earn money Sheridan began writing plays. From the standpoint of his career, 1775 was an incredible year in Sheridan's life. At the beginning of it, he was known only as the young husband of the beautiful Elizabeth; by the end, he was celebrated as the writer of two of the best comedies in the English language.

Thomas Gainsborough is an English landscape and portrait painter, one of the great English masters. He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk in the family of a clothier. He showed an aptitude for drawing early and first was encouraged by his mother, who was a woman of well-cultivated mind and excelled in flower-painting. He used to spend a lot of time outdoors, drawing. In 1740, at the age of 13 he was sent to London to study art. He spent several years working in the studios of different artists, one of whom was Hubert Gravelot, a draughtsman and engraver, another one was a scene-painter and illustrator Francis Hayman. In 1748 Gainsborough presented The Charterhouse (1748) to the Foundling Hospital, it was a way for the artist to show one of his works, because at that time there were no other possibilities for young artists. In 1746 Gainsborough married Margaret Burr He first did not have many commissions there and had a lot of time to indulge in his favorite pursuit: to draw landscapes. Also he created many beautiful pictures of his wife and daughters such as

From the Paper:
"This study will examine symbolism and its role and significance in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's The School for Scandal. Symbolism in the play will be examined in terms of its relationship to the characters and the light it sheds on the characters. Sheridan's play is a comedy about the viciousness of the human inclination to gossip and spread malicious rumors about others. As might be expected, the symbolism in the play is used in the service of that comic view of human nature. At the same time, however, the play should not be dismissed as a completely cynical look at a humanity lost in malice and deceit, for Sheridan also makes it clear that there is goodness in humanity as well. Still, he is not an angry writer using symbols to express that rage at humanity's vices. To the contrary, he even gently mocks his own imagined goodness in the Prologue to the.." Sheridan, Richard Brinsley
Encyclopedia Article Sheridan, Richard Brinsley (1751-1816), British dramatist and politician, whose work is considered the finest development of the comedy of manners in 18th-century England. Sheridan was born in Dublin, Ireland and educated at the University of Oxford. In 1775 three of his comic works; a drama, The Rivals; a farce, St. Patrick's Day; and an opera, The Duenna, were produced with great success at Covent Garden, London. The score for the opera was written by his father-in-law, the composer Thomas Linley, with whom Sheridan purchased the Drury Lane Theatre in London. From 1776, Sheridan served as manager of the theater and produced there several of his other witty satires on fashionable society, quite different from the sentimental comedies then popular. Among his works are The School for Scandal (1777) and The Critic The School for Scandal is considered his masterpiece: a series of gossipy but polished, fast-paced scenes exposing contemporary foibles through the actions of the vigorously drawn characters.

London Blue Plaques
Actor and writer Stephen Fry poses outside 54 Eaton Square in London - the former home of actress Vivien Leigh - during the launch of 'Handheld History'  Blue plaques are among the most familiar features of the London streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around twenty plaques each year. From 2004, the scheme will be extended across England on a region-by-region basis; there are already blue plaques in Merseyside, Birmingham, Southampton and Portsmouth.
