(Mohamed Azakir/Reuters)
Prime Minister Omar Karami's government came under unprecedented pressure after the Feb. 14 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. Protesters turned their sights on the president and demanded he also step down. "The people have won," main opposition leader Walid Jumblatt told LBC television after Karami announced the resignation of the cabinet to a parliament session debating Hariri's killing. Ecstatic protesters, having got their wish for the government's resignation, chanted "Syria out" and "Freedom, sovereignty, independence." Syria has wielded political and military power in its smaller neighbor for decades.

Hizbullah - the Party of God
Hizballah - social radicals.
The prevelant perception of Hizbullah in the "west" is of a militant, armed terrorist organization bent on abduction and murder. While the initial years of its emergence as a political movement in Lebanon were turbulent and controvertial, The Party of God has matured to become an important and pivotal force in Middle East politics in general and Lebanese society in particular. Hizbullah has its immediate historic roots in the social uprising of the Lebanese Shia community in the late 1960's and early 70's that took its inspiration from the charismatic Imam Musa Sadr who "disappeared" in Libya in 1978. Sadr's Movement of the Deprived (Harakat al-Mahrumin) with it's military wing and present-day political party, Amal soon became mired in the convolutions of Lebanese politics and the 15-year civil war. The Israeli invasion of 1982 provided the catalyst for Shiite radicalism. Hizbullah emerged with the aim of expelling the occupants and alleviating the social sufferings of the Shia community. While Al Moqawama al Islamia (The Islamic Resistance) has attracted much of world attention, the various other community activities of Hizbullah are of equal if not greater importance at home. It runs a range of philanthropic and commercial activities including hospitals, medical centers, schools, orphanages, rehabilitation centers for the handicapped, supermarkets, gas stations, contructions companies, a radio station (

Lebanese premier makes way for new leader
Hoss, left, and Hariri
December 3, 1998
Web posted at: 5:56 p.m. EST (2256 GMT) BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) Outgoing Prime Minister Rafik Hariri said Thursday he will stay involved in public affairs, and the country's new prime minister, Salim Hoss, began to assemble his government. Hariri's departure was one of his own making, in the wake of a shake-up apparently engineered by Lebanon's new president, army chief Emile Lahoud. RELATED VIDEO CNN's Brent Sadler reports from Beirut Windows Media Hariri declined to carry on as prime minister after accusing Lahoud of interfering with the premier selection to build his presidential powers. Hariri said that could put the country at risk. "This is no doubt a major change in Lebanese politics," said Farid Khazen, who teaches politics at the American University of Beirut. "And I would say maybe it's some sort of coup d'etat in Lebanon."

However while the Lebanese authorities demanded that UNIFIL police the Israeli-Lebanese border, by the time the Israeli withdrawal was completed, in June 1985, Israel had ensured that a narrow buffer zone, policed by the SLA, was in place along the border.
An emergency summit meeting of Arab leaders in Casablanca, Morocco, in May resulted in the formation of a Tripartite Arab Committee, comprising King Hassan of Morocco, King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and President Chadli of Algeria.
The Committee aimed to implement a cease-fire agreement within six months, monitored by an Arab observer force, and to act as an intermediary between the conflicting forces in Lebanon, in order to facilitate an agreement on political reform and the election of a new President.
In September (as envisaged in the May agreement) Lebanon and Syria signed a mutual security agreement. Syrian forces began to withdraw from Beirut in March 1992, in preparation for their scheduled withdrawal to eastern Lebanon by September.
Lebanon's National Assembly held an election on October 15, 1998, to choose a successor to outgoing President Elias Hrawi. The result was a foregone conclusion, according to analysts. Syria - the power broker in Lebanon, with 35,000 troops stationed there -had already given the nod to army commander General Emile Lahoud, 62.
