ATLANTA (March 23, 2000)
The magnet school, housed at Rockdale County High School, is not a vocational school but a four-year academic program. Students will meet the requirements for a high school diploma while also acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to meet industry's increasing demand for technology workers.
The course of study will provide real-world applications of theories in information technology and telecommunicationstwo critical and growing job sectors. Information technology and telecommunications span a broad range of fields and disciplines, including digital and analog electronics, computer engineering and software, information transmission via light and radio frequency waves, and the human-computer interface. Rockdale County school officials are developing the criteria for admission. Rising 9th- and 10th-grade students will be eligible to apply for academic year 2000-01. During subsequent years, the program will be offered only to rising 9th-grade students. A maximum of 40 students will be accepted during the first year. "This initiative can be a model of how to bring the excitement of science and technology to young people and give them access to outstanding career opportunities in a technology driven society and economy," said Jean-Lou Chameau, dean of the College of Engineering.

GEORGIA The processes of establishing the independent state, new social system, and market economy since the 1990s caused substantial basic changes in the education system. The education system has to provide the realization of mutual interests of an individual, the society, and the state. The program of reforms of the Georgian education system is based on the recommendation of the UN (Education Planning for 2000, UNESCO, Mexico, 26 September, 1990, Recommendation Modules of the UNESCO International Institute for Education Planning and Administration, UNESCO, Paris, 1994). The reform program was discussed and confirmed by the government of Georgia on 19 September 1995. The state network of boarding schools also undergoes qualitative changes. Several programs were created to improve the situation in this sector of education. The programs were supported by the UNISEF, the Liege of Defense of the Georgian Constitution, the Georgian Association of Children, the Palace of Youth, its regional branches and other organizations. Due to the State Program of Reforms in Education the activity of the Ministry of Education of Georgia is orientated to:
  • maintaining and conservation of education institutions during the transition to market economy;

Figure 11 Number of schools The same tendency of decreasing has the number of students shown in Figure 12. But in this case the number of pupils in primary and secondary schools is practically unaltered, while the number of basic school students Figure 12. Number of students decreases approximately two times. The explanation of this figure is ease for the students of this type have alternative way to continue study at professional or vocational schools. The diagram in Figure 11 depicts the ratio of boys and girls in schools. The ratio is about fifty-fifty that reflects the status among the population of relevant age. A lot of teachers left schools for another jobs in these years. The most crucial decrease occurred among male teachers. Analyzing Figure 12 we are able to make a conclusion that the number of primary school teachers is practically unaltered and at the same time in 1998 we have only 52 thousand teachers, while in 1990 this figure was more then 80 thousand. The part of male teachers among primary school teachers was less then 10 percent, but among the teachers of grades 5-11 was much greater. The most of them left teaching for more profitable job to keep their families in better economical conditions. Figure 12.

Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is.
Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.
