NATIVE AMERICAN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE IN THE CLASSROOM
AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
Joan Berman
October 1998; June 1999; February 2002; January 2004 In my dual roles as Native American Studies Librarian and children's literature specialist at the Humboldt State University Library I am often asked to recommend "good" Native American children's books. I have prepared this bibliography as an introduction to a complex topic. I invite the reader to explore the selections, bearing in mind that although I have attempted to include the major works on the subject, I have also noted items of specific interest to the local, California community. This was initially prepared as an example of an annotated bibliography for my class, Professional Studies 180: Library Sources in Education, Fall 1998. Multicultural Review , 1(2), 26-33. The authors were president and secretary of the American Indian Library Association at the time this article was written; it is an adaptation of a program presented at the American Library Association Annual Conference in 1991. The selective annotated bibliography is in four parts: recommended titles, titles to avoid, guides to selecting books and sources of current reviews, and sources for books on Indians. This is an excellent, accessible introduction to the subject. Charles, J. (1996). Out of the cupboard and into the classroom: children and the American Indian literary experience.

Purpose The purpose of this pathfinder is to guide children's literature students, scholars and educators in the discovery and use of resource materials about the history and scholarship of Mother Goose. This is not meant to be an exhaustive source covering all occurrences of information regarding the topic but rather a place to begin exploring what has been written on the significance of Mother Goose in the realm of children's literature. Introduction Mother Goose nursery rhymes are some of the earliest and most widely published and distributed forms of children's poetry, which makes them an excellent place from which to begin a study of the history and development of children's literature and illustration in general. Much has been written about the historical context of the rhymes and about their place in the experience of childhood. The grouping of the resources in this pathfinder will follow from general to specific and will attempt to summarize the content, focus and reading level of each source in order to save the reader time in viewing irrelevant sources. We have, in fact, a pretty good collection of children's literature. It will be found in the CURRICULUM COLLECTION in the Main Stacks. This is a room whose entrance is at the far end of Rows 52-53. We have virtually all of the Newbery and Caldecott winners, and, for the last 10 years or so have been receiving all of the winners and runners up in a number of different children's book award programs, like Coretta Scott King, American Library Association's Notable Book/Best Book listings, Boston Globe, Scott O'Dell, and more. It all adds up to a pretty substantial set. And, of course, there are good collections in the local public libraries. All of these books are listed in OSCAR with Location listed as Orradre Curriculum. If you want to browse this collection, go in the Curriculum Room and look at the books with call numbers beginning PZ.
