by Kira Isak Pirofski , San Jose State University ABSTRACT Growth in immigration, rising birth rates among Hispanic women, and yearly increases in the number of disabled students mainstreamed into general classrooms have changed elementary and secondary school classrooms from "homogenous" to "diverse" settings. This demographic change forced educators to rethink language arts curriculum and dispense with standard texts that had been use for decades. The "new" classroom necessitated literature that is multicultural, inclusive, and gender bias free. While most educators advocate using said childrens literature, it simply is not available, and our literary canon seems bereft of books depicting minorities, African-Americans, disabled, and non-sexist literary characters. This paper reviews the literature which underscores the lack of non-gender biased, multicultural, and inclusion literature. It also includes a list of childrens books that are appropriate for the mixed classrooms that are increasingly becoming the norm.

Book Information About the book Reviews Wild Things
    Children's Culture and Ecocriticism
Edited by Sidney I. Dobrin and Kenneth Byron Kidd Wild Things examines the ways in which literature, media, and other cultural forms for young people address but are also shaped by nature, place, and ecology. A guiding premise of the book is that children today have limited opportunities for nature experience. This collection acknowledges and intervenes in the on-going debate about what constitutes sufficient or appropriate nature education, and about the mediating role of representation.
The first book to conjoin the fields of children's literature and ecocriticism, Wild Things provides scholars and teachers with essays that discuss particular texts as well as larger historical patterns and theoretical paradigms. Essays focus on classic literary works such as Charlotte's Web and The Lorax as well as on series fiction, nature magazines, environmental music and videos, the Muppets and other Jim Henson productions, and Disney's latest theme park, Animal Kingdom.
