By Douglas Cruickshank Complete archives for People Happy birthday, Miss Welty by Kate Moses April 13, 1999 I t's the end of summer at the beginning of the century, the dark middle of the night on a street and in a house just like the one where Eudora Welty grew up in Jackson, Miss., and a little girl named Josie has been roused from her bed, dressed in the wrong coat and escorted by her parents to a safe room during a tornado. As the storm passes eerily over and her smaller brother yells in his sleep, Josie floats through her dream-life childhood, effortlessly conjuring visions of the season now passing toy tattoos of flower baskets and Athenian ruins transferred onto her arms and legs, live June bugs on threads, the fascinating golden-haired teenage neighbor, Cornella, in her high-heeled shoes. The morning after the storm, Josie finds a wet scrap of paper outside a torn bit of ardent love letter with Cornella's name scribbled on it, which Josie hides in her "most secret place":

    Historical Backgrounder
The Birth of Eudora Eudora's rich history spans more than a decade - a decade in which the program has evolved into a robust, industrial-strength desktop program that allows users to manage and control their email through an intuitive interface with powerful features. Originally developed as a freeware product by Internet pioneer Steve Dorner in 1988, Eudora broke new ground by combining the best attributes of various emerging email technologies. The program did not spring from a traditional center of high-tech innovation such as the Silicon Valley, but rather, from a college campus in the nation's heartland. Eudora was developed by Steve Dorner at the University of Illinois, where Mosaic was also eventually developed. Dorner was a computer programmer working on TCP/IP (transmission control protocol/Internet protocol) applications and servers for the computer science department on the Urbana-Champaign campus. This was his first exposure to Internet protocols, chiefly file transfer protocol (ftp) and telnet, before he moved on to developing "ph" for Net directories. After growing bored with building directories, Dorner turned his attention to email. Although electronic messaging was still in its infancy, Dorner realized that an elegant email system could greatly enhance and facilitate communications among students and faculty on campus.

Writers - Eudora Welty: Overview (Seated left to right) Veteran TV Journalist Roger Mudd, host Gene Edwards, former Mississippi governor William Winter, and Welty scholar Suzanne Marrs share an intimate discussion of Eudora Welty in the Mississippi Public Broadcasting series "Writers." Former Mississippi Governor William Winter had known Eudora Welty the longest. Along with Charlotte Capers, Winter was instrumental in persuading Welty to leave her house to the state as a literary museum. And quite a house it is! The Tudor style home was built by her father in 1925, on what was then a gravel road north of Jackson. Eudora Welty moved in as a teenager, with her family, and lived there until she died in July, 2001. If all goes as planned, the house should be opening as a literary museum in 2005.

Eudora Welty was born in Jackson, Miss., on April 13, 1909. In 1925, she attended the Mississippi State College for Women, but later transferred to the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She spent an academic year in New York City, studying at the Columbia University School of Business. The untimely death of her father in 1931 prompted her return to Jackson, where she worked for the local radio station and wrote society news for the Commercial Appeal, a Northwest Mississippi newspaper.
In 1935 and 1936, Welty worked for Franklin Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration (WPA) as a junior publicity agent and traveled around Mississippi promoting new roads, airstrips, canning factories and economic development. In 1936, she published her first short story.

    SUBJECT/TITLE:
Eudora Welty "My continuing passion," author Eudora Welty has said, is "to part a curtain, that invisible shadow that falls between peoplethe veil of indifference to each other's presence, each other's wonder, each other's human plight." For more than half a century she has parted this curtain, not only in her writing but also in her lesser-known photographs, taken mostly in her home state of Mississippi. "She is one of my favorite writers," says Bruce Weber, "and when I first discovered her photographs, I could imagine her words all over them." But nothing prepared Weber for the experience of photographing Welty, then 87. "She still lives across the street from the school she once went to, and her sense of humor and flirtatiousness has not waned a bit," says Weber. "She's what you'd call a dream."

Mrs. Watts and Mrs. Carson were both in the post office in Victory when the letter came from the Ellisville Institute for the Feeble-Minded of Mississippi. Aimee Slocum, with her hand still full of mail, ran out in front and handed it straight to Mrs. Watts, and they all three read it together. Mrs. Watts held it taut between her pink hands, and Mrs. Carson underscored each line slowly with her thimbled finger. Everyone else in the post office wondered what was up now. American Prose Since 1945: Realism and Experimentation: Eudora Welty (1909- )
Index Born in Mississippi to a well-to-do family of transplanted northerners, Eudora Welty was guided by Warren and Porter. Porter, in fact, wrote an introduction to Welty's first collection of short stories, A Curtain of Green (1941). Welty modeled her nuanced work on Porter, but the younger woman is more interested in the comic and grotesque. Like the late Flannery O'Connor , she often takes subnormal, eccentric, or exceptional characters for subjects. Despite violence in her work, Welty's wit is essentially humane and affirmative, as, for example, in her frequently anthologized story "Why I Work at the P.O.," in which a stubborn and independent daughter moves out of her house to live in a tiny post office. Her collections of stories include The Wide Net The Golden Apples The Bride of the Innisfallen (1955), and
