The protocol used most often to transfer mail from a server to the email program on your computer is POP, the Post Office Protocol. Eudora uses POP, too. This made Steve Dorner, the main author of Eudora in 1990, think of the short story " Why I Live at the P.O. " ( compare prices ), which he had read in college. The story is by the great Southern American writer Eudora Welty . The great email program Eudora is named after her. Eudora Welty: An Overview: Though Eudora Welty (1909-2001) traveled all over the world during her lifetime, she lived most of her 92 years in the place she was born: Jackson, Mississippi. As one might expect, her writing, which has been compared to Chekhov's, is deeply rooted in Southern culture. Biographical Information: The daughter of northerners, Welty grew up in a house full of books. Her father was president of an insurance company, which allowed her to quit working and write full time early on in life, though she had attended college at the University of Wisconsin and received a graduate business degree from Columbia. After school, she returned to the house she grew up in, and continued living there until her death. When asked in an interview why she never married, she replied, "It never came up." Most Important Works: Welty published four volumes of short stories including "A Curtain of Green" and "The Wide Net." (For a classic Welty story, check out "Why I Live at the P.O." or "Death of a Traveling Salesman.") She won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel "The Optimist's Daughter" in 1973. She also received the National Medal for Literature, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and honorary degrees from Yale and Harvard, among other schools.

The Eudora Welty Writers' Symposium, an annual October event at Mississippi University for Women, was established in 1989 to honor Miss Welty and to commemorate the inauguration of Dr. Clyda Rent. During the Symposium, which is sponsored by the Humanities Division, Southern writers read from and discuss their works to an audience of several hundred. In 1996, the symposium and its director, Dr. Ginger Hitt, were presented the first-ever Chair's Award for Excellence by the Mississippi Humanities Council. Each year a theme is formulated to provide coherence and to stimulate interest. Writers whose works seem to embody the theme chosen for a given year are invited to read from a work and to discuss some aspect of the work: Characterization, locale, autobiographical elements, problems of dialogue/dialect, etc. From 1989 through 1997, forty-nine different writers and thirty-six scholars have appeared. A list of past themes and participants is provided below. The symposium has established a reputation for showcasing new talent: Ann Patchett, Vicki Covington, Larry Brown, Dori Sanders, Jeanne Lebow, Nanci Kincaid, Clifton Taulbert, Elizabeth Dewberry, Dorothy Shawhan, Rebecca Wells, Judson Mitcham, and Lynna Williams appeared on the symposium program after publishing a single work, or in a few cases, two. They are now recognized as prominent contemporary southern writers.

It is the tale of an old woman's journey to town to get medicine for her grandson. The journey is not easy for an old woman, who shakes her cane at the bushes to scare out the animals who might get underfoot, gets caught by thorns, and falls into a ravine, unable to get up until a young hunter happens by and gives her a hand. The story received an O. Henry prize.

Library acquires collection of Eudora Welty
Princeton NJ The University library has acquired a remarkable collection of the works of writer Eudora Welty through the Richard Ludwig Endowment. Welty received an honorary doctorate from Princeton in 1988 and served as the first Belknap Visitor in the Humanities in April 1985. She died in 2001 at the age of 92. The collection of her works includes more than 180 items, ranging from first editions of her novels and short stories to drawings for her high school yearbook. The endowment was set up in 2001 by Michael Spence, a 1966 Princeton graduate and a winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in economic sciences, and his wife, Monica. It honors Spence's mentor at Princeton, the late Richard Ludwig, professor of English emeritus and former chair of the Program in American Studies, who died April 28. The Welty collection joins the library's strong holdings of writers from the South, a program of collecting first begun by the library together with the Department of English in the 1930s. Over the years, the program has added collections of the manuscripts and books by Allen Tate, Caroline Gordon, Thomas Wolfe and William Faulkner. Library staff told Ludwig several months before his death that it planned to acquire the Welty collection by using the fund created in his honor. The collection is the second major acquisition by the library through the Spence gift. The first purchase was a collection of the correspondence of William Ewart Gladstone, who served as the four-time British prime minister between 1869 and 1894.
