If there is not a new man, how can the new clothes be made to fit? If you have any enterprise before you, try it in your old clothes. All men want, not something to do with, but something to do, or rather something to be. Perhaps we should never procure a new suit, however ragged or dirty the old, until we have so conducted, so enterprised or sailed in some way, that we feel like new men in the old, and that to retain it would be like keeping new wine in old bottles. Our moulting season, like that of the fowls, must be a crisis in our lives.” —

Pronouncing Thoreau
The author's name is commonly pronounced "thur-ROW," but his name actually sounds like the word "thorough," with the accent on the first syllable. Upon meeting Thoreau, philosopher and writer Bronson Alcott wrote in his journal the phonetic pronunciation "thorough." And in a letter dated after Thoreau's death, his Aunt Maria wrote to a friend that she had suffered both pronunciations through her life, but that their name is pronounced "thorough." I lived there two years and two months. At present I am a sojourner in civilized life again."

Henry David Thoreau
Thoreau was born of French and Scottish stock at Concord, Massachusetts. He grew up in a conservative environment of genteel poverty. He was educated at Harvard, and started out as a teacher; but, it not suiting him, Thoreau turned from it to the family business of making lead pencils and serving as a general handy man for the community. Believing that his tax money should not be used promoting programs that he had no belief in, in 1843, Thoreau was arrested for not paying his poll tax; and, for this act of civil disobedience, he spent a night in jail (he was quite prepared to spend a lot more time for his principles, but he was chagrined to find out that one of his aunts had paid his tax bill for him). If the government (Massachusetts had just voted to return runaway slaves), "requires you to be the agent of injustice to another, then, I say, break the law ... What I have to do is to see, at any rate, that I do not lend myself to the wrong which I condemn." In 1845 he built a cabin at Walden Pond; he wrote of his experiences there, in his book, Walden. Like his neighbour, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thoreau was a Transcendentalist, one who believes in the "divine sufficiency of the individual." Emerson said of his friend;

Thoreau's Civil Disobedience
Let us teach that the honor of a nation
consists not in the forced submission of other states,
but in equal laws and free institutions,
in cultivated fields and prosperous cities;
in the development of intellectual and moral power,
in the diffusion of knowledge, in magnanimity and justice,
in the virtues and blessings of peace. William Ellery Channing, "First Discourse on War" Our country is the world, our countrymen all mankind. We love the land of our nativity, only as we love all other lands. The interests, rights, and liberties of American citizens are no more dear to us, than are those of the whole human race. William Lloyd Garrison, "Declaration of Sentiments, 1838" Nonresistance cannot be for war, capital punishment, slavery and all sorts of penal injury. Nor can it be for any government which is fundamentally for these things.

America's most famous nonconformist, Thoreau rebelled against the Establishment of his day. He rejected the world's definition of 'success' and demanded a life of personal freedom. He went to the woods, built a humble cabin on the edge of Walden Pond, Concord, Massachusetts...and learned about nature and life. Henry David Thoreau lived at Walden Pond from July 1845 to September 1847. His experience at Walden provided the material for the book Walden, which is credited with helping to inspire awareness and respect for the natural environment.

http://www.lewrockwell.com/ostrowski/ostrowski35.html
Henry David Thoreau: Libertarian by James Ostrowski "Know all men by these presents, that I, Henry Thoreau, do not wish to be regarded as a member of any society which I have not joined." "I simply wish to refuse allegiance to the State, to Withdraw and stand aloof from it effectually." America treats Henry David Thoreau like it treats its other libertarian heroes: it ignores their radical libertarian side. Jefferson, Thoreau, and Mencken were too brilliant, important, colorful, and original to ignore. These men had many sides but their political thought was essential to their spirits. Imagine John Wayne without the toughness. However, an illiberatrian nation cannot fully recognize their political thought. No problem. Take the cartoonist's pencil and erase their ideology and leave the slave-owning architect, naturalist nutball, and cigar-chomping curmudgeon, eccentrics all. Today, Thoreau survives almost exclusively as a pimple on the backside of the civil "rights" movement. His tactic of civil disobedience has been extracted and abstracted from its original radical libertarian context and made suitable for all variety of liberal and left redistributionist causes. God forbid any sort of non-left political movement borrows the idea.

(Source: Virginia Commonwealth University Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was a complex man of many talents who worked hard to shape his craft and his life, seeing little difference between them. One of his first memories was of staying awake at night "looking through the stars to see if [he] could see God behind them." One might say he never stopped looking into nature for ultimate Truth. Thoreau attended Harvard University and worked for several years as a surveyor and making pencils with his father. In 1845, at the age of 28, he decided to write his first book. He built a cabin on Walden Pond, where he began to write. While at Walden, Thoreau did an incredible amount of reading and writing, yet he also spent much time "sauntering" in nature. After 26 months, Thoreau returned to Concord, Massachusetts having completed his experiment in living and his book. Unfortunately, few people were interested in purchasing his book, so he spent the next nine years surveying and making pencils at times, but primarily writing and rewriting
