Inspirational Wales.
Inspiration is part of Welsh culture - a way of life in South West Wales. It's embedded in the landscape - in the untouched cliffs and beaches of Pembrokeshire, in the green fields and forests of Carmarthenshire, and in the beautiful coast and country of Swansea Bay and the Gower Peninsula. Welsh culture embraces inspiration at festivals and food fairs, theatres and arts centres, craft workshops and galleries. And it's something shared by visitors and locals alike, thanks to the region's friendliness and natural generosity of spirit. Come and explore Welsh culture first hand, and allow South West Wales to inspire you - as it has so many people before you.

On this day in 1954, Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood was published in England; coming out just four months after his death in New York, it was an immediate best seller. Thomas's lifelong ambivalence towards Wales "Land of my fathers. My fathers can keep it" is maintained in the play, his Laugharne becoming the imaginary village of Llareggub, or "bugger-all" backwards. "Child Dylan"
On this day in 1933 Dylan Thomas's "The force that through the green fuse" was published. It is one of his most anthologized poems, and its publication in a London newspaper just two days after Thomas's nineteenth birthday would cause the scholar William Empson to mark the calendar: "what hit the town of London was the child Dylan publishing 'The force that through the green fuse' ... and from that day he was a famous poet."

  • "A Child's Christmas in Wales" Read by Dylan Thomas Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) began his writing career as a journalist in his native town of Swansea, Wales. He then moved to London where he worked in broadcasting and wrote film scripts, prose and drama to earn enough money to enable him to write what he most wanted to poetry. In December 1934 his first book of poetry, "Eighteen Poems," appeared to critical acclaim. During his fourth lecture tour of the United States, in 1953, and a few days after his 39th birthday, he collapsed in his New York hotel. He died on Nov. 9 at St. Vincent's Hospital. His body was sent back to Laugharne, Wales, where his grave is marked by a simple wooden cross. Do not go gentle into that good night - Dylan Thomas Dylan Thomas's grave. Did he go gentle? Dylan Thomas was the archetypal Romantic poet: flamboyantly theatrical, a heavy drinker, constantly courting controversy in his private life. Do not go gentle into that good night is his most famous poem, with its immortal last line: "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" Dylan Thomas became a legendary figure, both for his work and the boisterousness of his life. He died at St Vincents Hospital, New York, on November 9th, 1953, at the age of 39 after a particularly long drinking bout. His body was sent back to Laugharne, Wales, where his grave is marked by a simple wooden cross. Not much to learn from there. But "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" is surely one of the greatest lines ever written...
    Do not go gentle into that good night [A Villanelle] Dylan Thomas. Funny-looking chap, but chicks dug him. Do not go gentle into that good night,
    Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
    Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. The Love Letters of Dylan Thomas Sourcebooks A classic Welsh writer, Dylan Thomas is one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. He once wrote of himself: "I hold a beast, an angel, and a madman in me, and my inquiry is as to their working, and my problem is their subjugation and victory, downthrow and upheaval, and my effort is their self expression." A self-described "scrubby Welshman," Thomas lived life to the fullest, expressing his passion through his poetry, letters and other works. This volume of love letters shows something of the personal life of Dylan Thomas: his loves, hates, and insecurities.

    Dylan Thomas
    Thumbing through my resources in Freshman Comp class I noticed the Dylan Thomas poem, Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night . I'd seen and read it so many times before; I can not say why I chose to focus my attention there. Sadder still, I've not any idea what source the professor selected to make these copies from. None the less, I began by reading the short passage, a mere five lines of text, which preceded the notorious work. I was so suddenly overwhelmed with a deep and heart wrenching understanding of how this man must have felt, I was brought to tears.
    The following is the text that appeared in this obscure copied material:
    One of the best-known examples of the modern villanelle is "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night," the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas's moving tribute to his father. In a note to his publisher when he sent him the poem Thomas wrote, "The only person I can't show the little enclosed poem to is my father, who doesn't know he is dying."
    We all feel the intensity and raw power our emotions are made of, but there are those that are driven almost to the point of absolute madness to release the storm surge within through some form of artistic expression. For an author there is no rest until a piece of their soul lies bare upon the paper. I know this feeling, the exhilaration, the pressing need, and the vivid restless dreams that haunt your mind and soul until you set it free.

    Dylan Thomas
    We present the poetry of Dylan Thomas, read by the author. Thomas often wrote for the sound of words as much as for their meaning, and hearing his rich voice and dramatic style lends a new sense to his verse. The New York Times called Thomas "both a maker and speaker of poetry," and this reading demonstrates the poet's unique manipulation of language and metaphor. Thomas was known for his stormy private life and alcoholism, and died in 1953 at the age of 39.
