W hile Dylan Thomas possessed immense gifts and talent which made him a professional success as a writer, he was often a disappointment on a personal level. Much of this personal failure could have stemmed from an inability to deal with the extreme demands that came with sudden fame. Some explanation must also lie in the various ways his personality have been described: alternately as humble, shy, confused and insecure on the inside, but outwardly neglectful, selfish, and egotistical yet always, and extremely, charming. His older sister Nancy was eight years old when Dylan was born on the 27th of October, 1914 in Swansea in southern Wales. His mother, Florence Williams, was a housewife and his father, David John Thomas (also known as "D.J." or "Jack"), was an English Literature teacher at Swansea Grammar School. Both were from Welsh backgrounds, surrounded by dozens of relatives in nearby towns and heavily influenced by religion and tradition. D.J. was known as a strict school teacher but was supposedly unsatisfied in this position since he believed his education and background warranted a higher place in the academic world. With his pretty blond curls and precocious manner, Dylan found he could get away with many things, and so he took advantage of this. Because his mother thought of him as a sickly child, he was soon conditioned to plead illness as a way of both garnering attention and getting himself out of anything he considered unpleasant, such as school.

Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) Welsh poet and prose writer whose works are known for musical quality of the language, comic or visionary scenes and sensual images. Dylan Thomas died in the United States on a tour on November 9, 1953. His death resulted much from his alcoholism, which have gained mythic proportions. The Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea even serves pints of Dylan's smooth ale. It has been claimed that the famous American famous songwriter and musician Bob Dylan, who was born Robert Allen Zimmerman, named himself after the Welsh poet, but Dylan himself had denied it. "The hand that signet the paper felled a city;
Five sovereign fingers taxed the breath,
Doubled the globe of dead and halved a country;
These five kings did a king to death."

(from 'The Hand That Signed the Paper', 1936) Dylan Thomas was born in the seaport town Swansea, West Glamorgan. His father, David John Thomas, was the senior English master at Swansea Grammar School, where Thomas was educated. His parents had a Welsh-speaking country background from Carmarthhenshire, but they adopted English language and culture. Although Thomas could not speak Welsh, he picked up the rhytms of the language, and started to write poetry while still at school. Thomas received little formal education. When he was twelve, his poem was published in the

He is widely regarded as one of the Twentieth Century's most influential lyrical poets, and amongst the finest as such of all time. His acclaim is partly due to his hallmark of idiosyncratic and surreal introspection, partly by his startling imagery that is brilliant and inspirational. Although Thomas was primarily a poet, he also published short stories, film scripts, publicly performed his works and conducted radio broadcasts. His most renowned work, Under Milk Wood - set in the fictional Welsh seaside village LLareggub, was a radio play for voices which contained a poetic sensibility. His most famous poem is arguably Do not go gentle into that good night - containing the line, "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" - an impassioned account of the scene which haunted him at his father's deathbed. The structure of the poem is a classic

Dylan Thomas, "The Rimbaud of Cwmdonkin Drive"
Dylan Thomas, drinking his muse
Dylan Marlais Thomas was born in Swansea, Wales on October 27, 1914. The name Dylan comes from the Mabinogion , a collection of 11 mediaeval Welsh tales. The word means "sea". In the tale Math, the son of Mathonwy, challenges Aranrhod, his niece who claims to be a virgin, to step over his magic wand. "Aranrhod stepped over the wand, and with that step she dropped a sturdy boy with thick yellow hair; the boy gave a loud cry, and with that cry she made her way for the door..... "Well," said Math, "I will arrange for the baptism of this one......and I will call him Dylan." The boy was baptized, whereupon he immediately made for the sea, and when he came to the sea he took on its nature and swam as well as the best fish. He was called Dylan (sea) son of Ton (wave), for no wave ever broke beneath him." Marlais is the name of a stream which runs from the hills near the birthplace of Dylan Thomas' great uncle Gwilym Marles Thomas. Marles is a variation of the name Marlais. Dylan Thomas' sister Nancy also bore a variation of the name Marles.
