Early in the 60's, my model junior citizenship fizzled. I became aware that, in the wake of Sputnik, my brains (like those of others) were being viewed as a national resource. A malaptitude manifested itself for mathematics, washing lab glasses (second only to writing grant requests the real business of science), and playing according to the rules. This ended my life in the sciences. I also found I couldn't work up an interest, no matter how I tried, in team sports or automobiles, precluding communication with 90% of my contemporaries. Instead, having stumbled on girls and the guitar, I made the happy discovery that success in both endeavors seemed related, and promptly became a very good guitar player. Worse, having read Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead, Anthem, and Atlas Shrugged almost at a sitting, I now became a public menace active in libertarianism at the tender age of 14. I campaigned for Goldwater, McCarthy, Hospers, and MacBride. Through a 5-year undergraduate tenure, I studied philosophy, psychology, anthropology, and war being the ultimate team sport worried about getting drafted. This last gave me an ulcer, which kept me from getting drafted. Recognizing that, at age 32, I was a failure, I did what any sensible failure would do: I ran for office. I'd already been Political Action Director for the Colorado Libertarian Party and served on state and national platform committees, where I won undying love of candidates everywhere by bringing up issues like children's rights, airport security, non-human sentience, open immigration, orbital defense (10 years before SDI), property rights in space, abortion-as-self-defense, and worst of all, the immorality of salaries for LP office-holders. Running as an anarchist, I opposed the 6-term Speaker of the Colorado House, establishing an LP percentage record 10 times higher than the old one, on a budget of $44.00. Without once wearing a tie.

L. Neil Smith - Libertarian Find out YOUR L. Neil Smith has twice won the Prometheus Award, given by the Libertarian Futurist Society for outstanding science fiction with libertarian themes. His Prometheus Award-winning novels were The Probability Broach (1982) and Pallas (1994). The Probability Broach was his first novel. It pictures a parallel libertarian earth, and wonderfully combines humor, action, suspense and libertarian ideology. The libertarian society in the book, and some of its characters, are further explored in sequels. Smith has written around twenty science fiction novels, many explicitly libertarian. He served on the Platform Committee of the Libertarian Party in the mid-70's, and in 1978 ran for state legislator as a Libertarian Party candidate, gaining 15% of the vote with a total expenditure of $44.00. L. Neil Smith is also an outspoken gun rights activist. He is founder and International Coordinator of the Libertarian Second Amendment Caucus, and is an NRA Life Member. Following is a list of some of his novels, along with brief summaries.

"Simply the best libertarian novel to come
along in a quarter of a century or so."
The Walton Street Tycoons by Jim Lesczynski
Reviewed by L. Neil Smith

Attribute to The Libertarian Enterprise As a published author, I get asked to read new, unpublished works a dozen times a year. It's always a risk to agree to read somebody's work because they obviously like me or they wouldn't have sent it to me. I often put it off, sometimes for months or even years, because I'm so afraid I'm going to hurt them by not being able to recommend it. Then, too, there's the fact that I seem to have been persona non grata in New York publishing for quite a while. To my knowledge, my recommendation has never done anybody any good in that particular venue. Odds are that it's a whole lot more like the proverbial Kiss of Death. Because of all that, I'm extremely happy (and very relieved) to be able to testify that sometimes it's worth the risk. As Exhibit A, I offer The Walton Street Tycoons by Jim Lesczynski, which is simply the best libertarian novel to come along in a quarter of a century or so. That you can buy it directly from Jim, and not the northeastern gatekeepers who would have censored him and kept 94% is icing on the cake.
