Catching Up with L. Neil Smith
by Ari Armstrong, December 7, 2006 Introduction: L. Neil Smith's novel The Probability Broach is a favorite among many who favor free markets and limited government. Smith, a Colorado writer, is working on several new projects. So I thought this would be a great time to see what he's up to and what he thinks about things. I should note that Smith and I disagree about some important issues. Mainly, I have become persuaded by Ayn Rand that a government limited to protecting individual rights is essential for human well-being, while Smith tends to take more of a Rothbardian anti-government line. Yet Smith remains one of the more interesting residents of Colorado. His genuine love of liberty shines through in his work. My questions are in bold. Smith's answers (submitted November 25), while bold in substance, are displayed in regular type. I wish to thank him for his generosity with his time. Ari Armstrong Let's cover a bit of background first. How long have you been writing fiction professionally? How did you get into this line of work? What was your first book? How many books have you written since? Professionally? Well, I tried to write my first "book" in third grade. It was simply about a manned rocket counting down to blastoff, and the neighbors laughed at me. That was in 1954 I wonder how they would feel now, if they remembered it. In fifth grade, I adapted the movie

What's it Gonna Take? by L. Neil Smith
Americans are not asleep. Like other people, everywhere around the world, they simply have priorities in life that are different from those of activists and ideologues...
Understand that most activists and ideologues are collectivists meaning socialists of one variety or another, whether they're the left wing socialists who call themselves "liberals" or "progressives" or the right wing socialists who call themselves "conservatives". They uniformly hate, loathe, and despise the idea that your life is yours to command and its own justification. It drives them insane with fury and frustration, because they want to believe, and they want you to believe, that your life belongs to some cause "greater than yourself" namely, to them to be disposed of in any manner they desire, in pursuit of whatever they feel is important at the moment, be it war or welfare.

http://www.agt.net/public/dtander/politics.html
ABOUT MY POLITICAL VIEWS
I am not an anarchist...my political views aren't that developed. I do believe we should abolish compulsory taxation and see how much government we have left after a few years. I'm betting there wouldn't be much. I'm a member of the International Society For Individual Liberty ...a highly worthy and arguably the best Libertarian organization extant. Jessica and I attended the ISIL world conference in Whistler B.C. in August 1996 and had a really great time. I'm a signatory to the Covenant of Unanimous Consent , a political document written by my good friend L. Neil Smith. A number of Neil's excellent political essays and other information may be found on L. Neil Smith's Webley Pages I am a member of the National Firearms Association of Canada... this country's largest (in terms of membership) civil-rights protection organization.
I am also a proponent of the Fully Informed Jury concept Finally, I am a current member and supporter of the Reform Party of Canada ...not because I am totally in love with their policies or platform, but because they will slow, if not stop, the forces of statism in Canada. Possibly they will even reverse the trend. The matter is too urgent to be terribly picky, just at the moment. I worked on the campaign of Diane Ablonczy, MP in Calgary North during the '93 federal election, acting as her press secretary. Needless to say, her success was entirely due to my efforts.

2008-01-16 02:51 am UTC link He's right of course. What's to be done about it? The socialist revolution occurred in the 1930s http://www.constitution.org/col/jrb/0042 0_jrb_fedsoc.htm How many Americans are aware of, or would even care about it? The linchpin IMO is their public education system (yes, the socialists own education. Understanding that is the first step) and we certainly don't see any serious effort to undo THAT. Instead we're treated to poll numbers telling us which socialist candidate is ahead of the other socialist candidates. Lyle Reply to this Thanks for the link!
