Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students generally respond to Sinclair's portrait of the unsanitary conditions in the meat-packing industry. They tend to be interested in the history of The Jungle how it was written, the federal legislation that was passed because of the public reaction to it, etc. The most difficult problem in teaching The Jungle is how to approach a text in which literary qualities are subordinated to political purpose. The Jungle does not lend itself to the kinds of literary discussions that most of us are accustomed to. Its literary shortcomings are obvious. One way to begin discussing The Jungle would be to approach it as a political novel. Work with your students to define the genre of the political novel. Compare The Jungle to other political novels the students might have read. Discuss the criteria by which we evaluateor should evaluatea political novel. Should our criteria include social and/or political considerations? (It might be useful here to draw a parallel between a political novel and a postmodern novel, for example, in which ideas overshadow the other ingredients of the fiction.)

The Brass Check: A Study of American Journalism
By Upton Sinclair, Author of The Jungle The Brass Check: A Study of American Journalism is the classic expose of media coverups. The links to the left will let you sample the first nine chapters. Via the TeleRead Web Log , you can download the entire book. Our first complete online edition is in Word, Mobipocket and Microsoft Reader formats, as well as ASCII and HTML (see the updates in the download message) This is the first time The Brass Check has been on the Net. As a site dedicated to accessibilty of books and freedom of expression, we think that Upton Sinclair would be pleased. Early in The Brass Check , Sinclair tells of the horrors he faced while seeking a home for The Jungle , his 1906 novel about the meat-packing industry. Doubleday shunned his next work. S urprise of surprise, the author became a self-publisher at times and released The Brass Check himself in 1919. We've digitized the beginning of his own paperback edition, a brittle copy of which we found through a used bookstore. In many ways beyond the perennial issue of cowardice in journalism and book publishingthis yellowed old book is still fresh. Sinclair even discusses the tendency of the media to fixate on authors as personalities at the expense of the actual books.

Oil! is a typical Sinclair novel - most of his fiction concerns itself with the predatory nature of untrammeled capitalism. Since this is a subject that never really goes out of date, neither should have Sinclair, but his concepts were always stronger than his characters, and nobody likes to be endlessly lectured. The Jungle , with typical indomitability he published it himself. It got great reviews, made a lot of money and forced changes in the meat-packing industry.

    Sinclair, Upton
Sinclair, Upton muckrakers , and a dedication to social and industrial reform underlies most of his writing. The Jungle (1906), a brutally graphic novel of the Chicago stockyards, aroused great public indignation and led to reform of federal food inspection laws. With the money earned from that novel, Sinclair established (1906) a short-lived socialist community, Helicon Home Colony, at Englewood, N.J., and a decade later he moved to Southern California. Among Sinclair's other novels exposing social evils are King Coal Oil!

US novelist. His polemical concern for social reform was reflected in his prolific output of documentary novels. His most famous novel, The Jungle (1906), is an important example of naturalistic writing, which exposed the horrors of the Chicago meat-packing industry and led to a change in food-processing laws. His later novels include King Coal Dragon's Teeth (1942), which won a Pulitzer Prize. hut(1)

Upton Sinclair became famous for his novel, "The Jungle," but this book wasn't the only novel with which Sinclair attempt to bring about social change. He once said, "My Cause is the Cause of a man who has never yet been defeated, and whose whole being is one all devouring, God-given holy purpose." Here are quotes from Upton Sinclair.

The Jungle

Open class warfare intensified after the 1886 Haymarket incident, when police attacked a Chicago demonstration demanding the 8-hour working day. In the resulting chaos a bomb was thrown, police and protesters were killed, and the leaders of the radical groups involved arrested, charged and seven of their number subsequently executed for murder. The newspapers whipped up public hysteria against the labour movement and the violent suppression of strikes by armed troops and private armies became widespread across America. Blacklisting, strike-breaking, the murder of trade unionists and police harassment were orchestrated by the business and political elite to prevent the formation of a mass working class organisation. The offices of trade unions and radical groups were often raided and ransacked, leaders arrested, printing presses destroyed and armed vigilante groups were organised by business to break-up meetings.
