Biography of Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973)
Pearl S. Buck Pearl S. Buck was born in 1892 in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Her father, Absalom Sydenstricker, was a Presbyterian missionary stationed in the small town of Chinkiang, outside Nanking. Consequently, Buck moved to China when she was three months old. She was raised by a Chinese amah who told her popular tales and myths, and she could speak and write both English and Chinese by the age of four. She also played freely with the village children, and in this way learned much about Chinese life. In 1900, when Buck was eight years old, the Boxer Rebellion threw the Sydenstrickers' life into turmoil. Chinese nationalists turned on Westerners, and for a while the family feared for their lives. Absalom sent Buck, her mother, and her baby sister to Shanghai, which was relatively safe for Westerners; in 1901 the family returned to America. However, they soon returned to China, heedless of danger. In 1909, Buck enrolled in Miss Jewell's School in Shanghai, an establishment that formerly educated privileged Western girls but that had lost much of its prestige in the previous years. While studying there, Buck also volunteered at The Golden Door, a shelter for Chinese slave girls and prostitutes. Her experience would mold her as a writer and as a person; throughout her years in China, Buck continued to pay particular attention to the plight of oppressed and poor Chinese women and girls.

She was also an adoptive parent, a prominent early critic of racial and religious matching , a thorn in the side of the child welfare establishment, and an advocate of special needs, transracial , and international adoptions The child of Protestant missionaries, Buck spent the first half of her life in China and the second half living in the United States. On June 26, 1892, the birth of Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker took place here. Later, writing under her married name of Pearl S. Buck, she won the hearts of Americans with her famous novel, THE GOOD EARTH, for which she won the PULITZER PRIZE FOR LITERATURE in 1932. Pearl S. Buck - (1892-1973) Buck's County By Scott Folz I. Biography Pearl Sydenstricker Buck was born on June 26, 1892 in a West Virginia home owned by her grandmother. Buck was born the fourth of seven children to Caroline and Absalom, two Presbyterian missionaries who were home from China. The family quickly returned to there home in China after Buck's birth. Buck grew up among traditions and customs of the Chinese, and her first language became Chinese. In 1910, Buck enrolled in Randolph-Macon Woman's College, in Lynchburg, Virginia. There she studied philosophy and was very active in the student government. Buck graduated from Randolph-Macon in 1914. She stayed for one semester to teach psychology and then returned to China to help her sick mother. On May 13, 1917 Buck married John Lossing Buck, an agricultural missionary. Buck was very unhappy with him and when asked why she married him she replied, "there is a time to marry" (American Lifestyle Series). In 1921, the Bucks' had their first child, Carol. Later after the birth, Buck realized that Carol had a disease called PKU. When Buck found this, she returned to the states and placed Carol in a full time facility in Vineland, New Jersey. From 1920-1933, the Bucks both taught and lived in Nanking on the campus of the university. In 1923, Buck published her first work. It was an article for Atlantic Magazine called

State one possible theme of the novel, and support your position. Give your opinion on why The Good Earth is considered an important novel in the canon of world literature, and why it was seminal in the nomination of Buck as a Nobel Prize winner. Appraise a significant conflict in the novel, and judge its thematic importance. Instructor's Recommendation: A basic tenet of the novel seems to be that virtue and hard work are rewarded. Yet, the riches that are brought back from the South (truly a turning point of the novel) are acquired through "chance" and trickery. Similarly, at the end of the novel, the roots established by Wang Lung will obviously be pulled up as the land is sold and divided by the sons. Are these events consistent with the novel's message that "virtue and hard work are rewarded"? Biographical Information
East Wind, West Wind was published in 1930, while she was still living in China. She followed that book with the Chronicles of the Family Wang, The Good Earth Sons (1932), and A House Divided (1935). It was The Good Earth that first brought Pearl Buck to the attention of the world, winning her the Pulitzer Prize and the William Dean Howell Medal. After her divorce in 1935 from John Buck, Pearl married her publisher, Richard Walsh, and the couple moved to Green Hills Farm in Bucks County, PA. From here, Pearl Buck would write more than 100 more books before her death in 1973. Her work brought numerous awards and recognitions, including the honor of becoming the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature (1938). Pearl Buck was more than just an author, even a great one, though. In her lifetime, she was recognized as a noted humanitarian, particularly concerned with the rights of women and children. She founded Welcome House, Inc., an international agency set up to promote the adoption of Asian-American children, now part of the Pearl S. Buck International Foundation, an organization "committed to making the world a more humane place for its children by promoting the appreciation and understanding of other cultures through education, adoption, and support." She used her work to bring attention to the inferior status of women in traditional China. Because of her experiences with her daughter Carol, whose story is told in
