Who is Pearl S. Buck?
Short biography about Pearl S. Buck author of The Good Earth and winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize in Literature
Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker was born on June 26, 1892. Pearl’s parents, Absalom and Caroline Sydenstricker, were Presbyterian missionaries on leave from China living in Hillsboro, West Virginia when Pearl was born. When Pearl was still an infant, they returned to Chinkiang on the Yangtse River in China. Pearl studied in the mornings with her mother and worked with a Chinese tutor during the afternoons. When Pearl was 17, she returned to the United States. She attended Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Virginia graduating in 1914. Her mother was in poor health and so Pearl returned to China. Pearl met John Lossing Buck and they were married in 1917. John was an American agricultural missionary living in China. Together they traveled to North China and then later moved to Nanking, where Pearl taught English Literature at the Southeastern University and University of Nanking. In 1921, they had their first child, Carol. Carol was born with PKU and tested extremely retarded. Pearl had a hysterectomy because of a uterine tumor found during the delivery of Carol. Pearl placed her child in an institution in New Jersey. They adopted a child in 1925; a baby girl named Janice. The Bucks had many problems in their marriage and soon were divorced.

Born Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker in Hillsboro, West Virginia to Caroline and Absalom Sydenstricker, Buck and her southern Presbyterian missionaries parents went to Zhejiang, China in 1895. She was brought up there and first knew the Chinese language and customs, especially from Mr. Kong, and then was taught English by her mother and her teacher. She was encouraged to write at an early age.
By 1910, she left for America and went to Randolph-Macon Women's College [1], where she would earn her degree in 1914. She then returned to China, and married an agricultural economist, John Lossing Buck, in 1917. In 1921, she and John had a daughter with phenylketonuria, Carol. The small family then moved to Nanjing, where Pearl taught English literature at University of Nanking. In 1925, adopted Janice (later surnamed Walsh) and subsequently 8 more adoptees. In 1926, she left China and returned to the United States for a short time in order to earn her Master of Arts degree from Cornell University.
Buck began her writing career in 1930 with her first publication of East Wind:West Wind. In 1931 she wrote her best known novel, The Good Earth, which is considered to be one of the best of her many works. The story of the farmer Wang Lung's life brought her the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1932. Her career would keep flourishing, and she won the William Dean Howells Medal in 1935.

    http://web.randolphcollege.edu/buck/pearl.asp
Pearl Sydenstricker Buck (1892-1973) , a 1914 graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman's College, was a woman far ahead of her time. She was a champion of civil rights, women's rights, children's rights, and the rights of those with disabilities long before these issues were talked about in public. Her long and tireless effort to increase understanding between Asia and America left a lasting imprint on the world. In many ways, Buck was a pioneer who appreciated Chinese life and culture as few Westerners had done before, and she shared her provocative insights with the world. Her most widely recognized book, The Good Earth , for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, offered a description of life in a Chinese peasant village and included the perspectives of women who lived and experienced everyday hardships. As a result, she changed forever the way we see Asia and the people with whom she lived and worked for more than 40 years. Buck was also an outspoken activist who used her position and considerable influence to advance the causes to which she was so passionately dedicated. In 1949, she helped to set up an international adoption agency, Welcome House, Inc., the first interracial and international adoption agency in the world. Ultimately, Buck herself adopted several interracial children. The Pearl S. Buck Foundation, started in 1964, was dedicated to helping Amerasian children. Welcome House and the Pearl S. Buck Foundation merged in 1992.

That's all I've done so far but it went together faster than I thought. I will send in updates as I go too. I'll say thanks again for the toothpick tip as I would never have got the back pleat right without it! Beth writes, "I've started on the back, seems to be going smoothly so far - I just find Kate's design with that back pleat to be ingenious. However, I think I need to make mine a little longer than the pattern calls for - and feel rather intimidated to figure out how without goofing up that pretty pleat as well as matching up the front pieces!" I think that lengthening the body would involve a bit more than just working it longer than instructed, because of the back pleat. I've never modified such a tailored garment before, so if anyone has some advice, please shout out!
