A By John Asling The 38th General Council of The United Church of Canada has approved a "milestone" document on the church's relations with the Jewish community that acknowledges a history of anti-Semitism within Christianity. Working in one of three decision-making commissions on August 13, Council received the final report of Bearing Faithful Witness, a study program the church has been engaged in since 1988, and approved a statement on United Church-Jewish relations today that says that anti-Semitism is an affront to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Dow Marmur, Rabbi Emeritus of Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto, one of the interfaith guests at Council, called the document a "milestone" in Jewish-Christian relations. "The United Church of Canada is making a lasting contribution to Jewish-Christian dialogue," Marmur said. Former moderator The Very Rev. Dr. Robert Smith, of the Justice, Global and Ecumenical Relations Unit, told commissioners the statement was one of the significant issues to come before the General Council, which is meeting August 10-16 in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Depending on how church size is defined, the United Church of Canada is either the largest or next to largest Protestant denomination: About 3.1 million Canadians identify themselves with the United Church of Canada The church reports 684,000 confirmed members. Fewer (about 2.2 million) Canadians identify themselves as Anglicans, However, the church reports 737,000 confirmed members more than the United Church. This is the most liberal of the larger Protestant denominations in Canada. It is exceeded in size only by the Roman Catholic church . It was formed in 1925 by a merger of most congregations of the Association of Congregational Churches in Canada , the Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church in Canada . Some Presbyterian congregations remained part of a separate mainline religious organization; some Methodists split off to form the very conservative Free Methodist church. From its birth, it has had to accommodate a diversity of theological beliefs. It has had a history of tackling publicly the really tough social issues. Some cynics might say that they have a continual urge to shoot themselves in the foot, or to form a circular firing squad. It can be argued that they lose membership whenever they enter into one of these debates. But they have also gained members, partly because of the respect that Canadians have for the Church's courage, openness, and inclusiveness. Less courageous liberal and mainline denominations often follow where the United Church has led.

They are the fourth largest religious group in the country, behind the Roman Catholic Church, persons of no religion, and those identifying with the United Church of Canada Priests in the Anglican Communion have blessed marriages, dogs, cats, buildings, apartments, houses, boats, cars, etc. However, as of 2004-JUN-1, they are not currently permitted to bless the relationships of committed, loving, gay or lesbian couples, except in one maverick diocese in British Columbia. The General Synod meets every three years and is made up of lay persons, priests and bishops from each diocese. Historically, major ethical conflicts like the abolition of slavery , decriminalization of contraceptives, ordination of women , permitting inter-racial marriage, etc. have been settled first by liberal faith groups, and last by conservative groups. Blessings of same-sex relationships and ordination of priests who are in committed same-sex relationships are already permitted within a few liberal faith groups in Canada notably the

Extractions: The Print Issue Subscribe Contact Information Who We Were, Who We Are The United Church Observer is one of the oldest and most respected church publications in Canada. Its origins date back to the first half of the 19th century, when Canadian Methodists decided to found a weekly newspaper. They called it The Christian Guardian and named Rev. Egerton Ryerson editor. Ryerson earned a reputation as a "doughty controversialist who, by his facile pen, fought the battle of civil and religious liberty." His passion and determination were his greatest strengths and often his worst enemies: in his first 11 years as editor he was voted in and out of office three times by the Methodist Conference. Starting out with the barest of resources, Ryerson guided The Christian Guardian to a circulation of 3,000 in its first three years. It came to be regarded as the leading newspaper of Upper Canada, a tireless defender of religious freedom, democracy and education. Ryerson went on to serve in government, and is credited with founding the public school system in Upper Canada. His counterpart in the Presbyterian Church in Canada was Peter Brown, editor of The Banner, begun by the denomination in 1843. Browns son George was the papers publisher; he went on to found the Toronto Globe, now known as The Globe and Mail, and is a father of Canadian Confederation.

Brief History Of The United Church A church begun in 1925 with Methodist, Congregational and Presbyterian roots. http://www.united-church.ca/ucc/history/
Extractions: SEARCH » Home About Us Congregational Life ... Justice, Global, Ecumenical Home About Us Who We Are A ... A Contents The United Church of Canada is the largest Protestant denomination in Canada. We minister to over 3 million people in 3677 congregations across the country. Ours is a rich history closely entwined with the development of Canada itself. The United Church was inaugurated on June 10, 1925 in Toronto, Ontario, when the Methodist Church, Canada, the Congregational Union of Canada, and 70 per cent of the Presbyterian Church in Canada entered into an organic union. Joining as well was the small General Council of Union Churches, centred largely in Western Canada. It was the first union of churches in the world to cross historical denominational lines and hence received international acclaim. Impetus for the union arose out of the concerns for serving the vast Canadian northwest and in the desire for better overseas mission. Each of the uniting churches, however, had a long history prior to 1925. French Huguenots, escaping persecution following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, brought the Reformed Faith to Canada. But even in the New World their growth and development were restricted. After the ceding of Nova Scotia to England in 1713, subsequent immigration of Presbyterians from Scotland and Ireland completely overwhelmed the small French contingent. The first ministers from Scotland were Daniel Cook, David Smith, and Hugh Graham who organized the Presbytery of Truro in 1786. In 1795 this presbytery was joined by a second, the Presbytery of Pictou, which represented another faction of Scottish Presbyterianism. In 1817 these two groups, joined by a few ministers from the Established Church of Scotland were able to come together and form the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Nova Scotia.
