In the opening sentences the Colonel expresses his pleasure at being in direct correspondence with so earnest, able, and honest a student of psychic science as Mr. Reimers, and proceeds as follows: - a ) the existence of adepts with developed psychic powers of the highest order; ( b ) the existence of a complete system of spiritual philosophy transmitted from an unknown antiquity; ( c ) of there being a genuine experimental science at its basis; ( d ) of the reconciliation of the latter with our most modern scientific discoveries; ( e Pioneer - which had been pilfered and laid by with malice prepensa Times . But, being so ignorant, it was a shame, almost a crime, that they should have assumed the role of exposers, and should have published anything whatever about the case until, by a series of seances held under scientifically perfect test conditions, they had arrived at clear proof as to the nature of the thing they were investigating. This was the course of Professor Hare, Mr. Wallace, Professor Zollner, Mr. Crookes, and other real investigators. It was also the theory upon which I worked with the Eddys, the Holmeses, and Mrs. Compton, and my over-caution as to parading my personal opinions drew from various men of science the declaration that my case was clearly proved by my facts. THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY INTRODUCTION Theosophy is derived from two Greek words –Theos , God; Sophia, Wisdom –and is therefore God-Wisdom, Divine Wisdom. Any dictionary will give its meaning : “A claim to a direct knowledge of God and of Spirits”, a definition which is not inaccurate, though it is scanty and affords but a small idea of all that is covered by the word, either historically or practically. The obtaining of “a direct knowledge of God” is –as we shall see in dealing with the religious aspect of Theosophy –the ultimate object of all Theosophy, as it is the very heart and life of all true Religion; this is “the highest knowledge, the knowledge of Him by whom all else is known”; but the lower knowledge, that of the knowable "all else”, and the methods of knowing it, bulk largely in Theosophical study. This is natural enough, for the supreme knowledge must be gained by each for himself, and little can be done by another, save by pointing to the way, by inspiring to the effort, by setting the example; whereas the lower knowledge may be taught in books, in lectures, in conversation, is transmissible from mouth to ear. The Theosphical Society does not impose any dogma upon its membership. Thus, the Theosophical Society does not in any way discriminate against persons based upon their sexual orientation. We have not been able to locate any statements in Theosophical literature either condemning or accepting homosexuality as unnatural or unnatural. Born Annie Wood, in London, she married a Church of England clergyman named Besant in 1867, but the marriage failed. An ardent Anglo-Catholic as a girl, she moved towards atheism and became a leading figure in the National Secular Society. In 1877 she published The Gospel of Atheism and was unsuccessfully prosecuted for selling 'obscene literature' - a tract advocating birth control. She campaigned for feminist causes, led the London match girls' strike of 1888, and became a member of the executive committee of the Fabian Society. In 1889 she announced that she had abandoned atheism and had joined the Theosophical Society . It is far more complicated and more intricate than Spiritism; at the same time its world and-life view is more complete and fascinating" (The Chaos of Cults The founder of Theosophy was Helena Petrovna Blavatskaya, known to her followers as Madame Blavatskv or simply "H.P.B.' Born in Russia in 1848, she was the daughter of noble parents, granddaughter of a princess and, through the Dolgoruky family, a descendent of the 12th century saint, Michael of Chernigov. In her youth she rejected Orthodox Christianity and, in fact, proclaimed "a venomous hatred of Christianity" throughout her whole life (Marion Meade, Madame Blavatsky: The Woman Behind the Myth). Although an ex-Theosophist and Orthodox convert told this writer that Blavatsky died repentant and reconciled to the Russian Church in her last days, this has not been confirmed. In fact, primary research into H.P.B.'s "career" is a daunting if not almost impossible task. Marion Meade, a non-Theosophist and Madame's scholarly biographer, has written: "When [H.P.B.] was forty-five, she looked back on four-and-a-half turbulent decades and observed, 'One cannot remake one's past, one can only efface it according to one's strength.' Actually she took pains to do both, and given her boundless energy, such efforts at revision were not entirely unsuccessful. For the last fifteen years of her life, she worked strenuously to re create herself, erasing what she regretted having done, inserting new material, continually editing herself into the person she would have like to have been" (Meade, ibid.), In this Blavatsky was like cult founders or their movements, who try to eliminate or gloss over the unsavory aspects of their founders' careers.

     Extractions: While William was still young, his mother, Mary Quan, died in childbirth. His father Frederick decided to take his children to America where they might have a better opportunity to develop their talents and earn a living. Arriving in New York in 1864, the family settled in Brooklyn where, despite hardship, William Q. Judge attended school. Judge joined the legal staff of George P. Andrews as a clerk and soon took an interest in the profession. While preparing himself for the bar, his father died and Judge found himself thrust into the world. He became a citizen in April 1872 and was admitted shortly thereafter to the State Bar of New York where he practised for the remainder of his life, specializing in commercial law. His compassion, integrity, conscientiousness and intelligence were widely recognized, and he was called 'the Christ of the legal profession.' In 1874 Judge married a staunch Methodist lady who bore him a child. His natural fondness for children increased his pain when his daughter died of diphtheria in infancy. In the same year Judge read Colonel Henry Steel Olcott's accounts of the spiritualistic phenomena occurring at the Eddy Homestead in Chittenden, Vermont. These articles were published in the New York Daily Graphic It was her eye that attracted me, the eye of one whom I must have known in lives long passed away. She looked at me in recognition at that first hour, and never since has that look changed. Not as a questioner of philosophies did I come before her, not as one groping in the dark for lights that Schools and fanciful theories had obscured, but as one who, wandering many periods through the corridors of life, was seeking the friends who could show where the designs for the work had been hidden. And true to the call she responded, revealing the plans once again, and speaking no words to explain, simply pointed them out and went on with the task. It was as if but the evening before we had parted, leaving yet to be done some detail of a task taken up with one common end; it was teacher and pupil, elder brother and younger, both bent on the one single end, but she with the power and the knowledge that belong but to lions and sages.
