Nothing is known of the childhood of Simon or of his training, save that he was the disciple of the Tanaim of Samaria, adept magicians and mystics who openly taught the doctrine of reincarnation. According to Eusebius, Dositheus may have been his teacher. Dositheus is the purported revealer of The Three Steles of Seth archon Hagion Pneuma, the Holy Spirit. Homilies Acts The written works Simon left behind have been destroyed by clerics who found his gnosis too metaphysical to comprehend and too threatening to tolerate. Nevertheless, so profound was his influence in Gnostic, pagan and even early Christian circles that the central themes of his message to humanity have survived massive and sustained efforts to eradicate them. This universal principle is an infinite power, the transcendental root of all that is or can be. In mythic imagery, this substance-principle is called uncreated Fire, and it has two aspects, the dark and invisible Fire, the absolute Root of All, and the manifest fire, the source of all existence. The relationship between these aspects consists in an inexplicable inner process which is the secret working of the Fire itself. This inaccessible activity is the same as that indicated in the philosophical Kabbalah as the emergence of Kether, the Crown and Seed of manifestation, from Ain-Soph Aur, That which cannot be said to exist or to not exist. From time to time exoteric presentations have appeared throughout the whole history of mankind, but all such presentations have been only partial and, apparently, have always been subject to corruption and decay. From this source came Buddhism, the Vedanta, and all the other great religious and philosophical movements ever known among men. Theosophy, in its primary meaning, is identical with both the utterly pure Root-Bodhi and its esoteric manifestation, while, in the more objective sense, as a movement starting in 1875, it is another opening of the door of presentation. Such is the statement one finds in the source material. The question as to whether Theosophy is what it claims to be does not concern us at this point. For the present we are interested only in its self-definition and its consequent relation to extant religions and philosophies, particularly historic Buddhism. As self-defined it is identical with the Root of all these religions and philosophies and, in especially marked degree, with the Root of Buddhism and Vedanta. Thus, in the FUNDAMENTAL sense, it claims to be identical with both Buddhism and Vedanta. It may well that a scholarly study of the source literature of Theosophy would find a predominance of the Buddhist approach and language. If so, this is quite understandable, since the two intelligences most responsible for Theosophical literature are self-confessed Buddhists in their personal consciousness and background. Nonetheless, they do not affirm Truth as being the exclusive monopoly of historic Buddhism. It is also possible that there does exist some Buddhist sect in which the formulated Dharma exists in a greater state of purity than elsewhere. In any case, Theosophy is not identical with the whole of exoteric Buddhism, nor with any other Oriental philosophy or religion. It ties in with occidental currents as well.

SYNESIUS The Cyrenaics of the fourth and third centuries B.C. anticipated later Epicurean philosophy. Aristippus of Cyrene held that one can know only one's own sensations, and therefore that pleasure is the only sensible end of human endeavour. For him, given the captivity of the senses, all pleasures are to be considered equally good. Theodorus, his follower, equated happiness with cheerfulness and thus found a basis for distinguishing between greater and lesser pleasures. Anniceris emphasized the pleasures of friendship, society and patriotism, but Hegesias held all pleasure to be illusion, arguing that the most mankind can hope for is the suppression of pain. He taught that death should be welcomed as the terminus of pain. Stoic views found favour among the practical Libyans, and neo-Platonic teachings were widely respected. The Christians of the Pentapolis were proud that the scriptures taught that "a man of Cyrene" had borne the cross of Jesus for him. Synesius was born in Cyrene around AD. 370 into a family descended from the city's founder. Together with his brother Euoptius, and sister Stratonice, he could say without fear of contradiction that "the public monuments of Cyrene show the succession from Heracles to me", and "from Eurysthenes who led the Dorians to Sparta down to my father my pedigree is carved on them". This movement is modern in the sense that its present form is only one and a quarter century old (speaking in 2000). The second meaning refers to the content found here as opposed to that found in the Esoteric Studies Guide . There I have focussed on the occult side of classical theosophy. Classical theosophy means in this case the theosophy of Blavatsky and her Mahatmas. In Modern Theosophy I focus on the more general subjects of ethics inner growth and wisdom metaphysics karma and reincarnation and introductions into theosophy . The writers are mostly from Theosophical Societies - whether founders or more modern. There are also naratives, jokes and stories by W.Q. Judge and others - well worth reading. Krishnamurti is one of the authors presented, even though technically he is not part of the movement. His work has changed the TS-Adyar profoundly though. For that reason excluding him would be folly.

'Kabbalah' is Hebrew for "that which is received" and refers to a secret oral tradition of teaching which extends from teacher to pupil. Kabbalah, which is the spelling usually preferred by scholars, specifically refers to oral mystical teaching not normally revealed to the general population, but passed on from the adepts to the initiates. The term "Kabbalah" itself was first applied to secret mystical teachings in the eleventh century by Iba Gabriol, a Spanish philosopher, and has since become applied to all Jewish mystical practice. Although the Kabbalah is founded on the Torah , the Jewish scriptures and other sacred writings, it is no intellectual discipline; and the mystic is not to practice it in solitude, but is to employ it to enlighten humanity. The Kabbalist seeks two things: an union with God while maintaining a social, family, and communal life within the framework of traditional Judaism. Those who have adopted the Kabbalistic teachings have modified these latter aims. In legend God taught the Kabbalah to some angels, who in turn after the Fall taught it to Adam.
