Extractions: Doctrines The teachings of Soka Gakkai (Value-Creating Educational Association) are derived from those of Nichiren (see NICHIREN), via the Nichiren Shoshu sub-sect from which Soka Gakkai formally split in the 1990's. Nichiren's teachings however have been considerably modified in Soka Gakkai by the integration of the 'value-creating' (so-ka) educational philosophy of the first founder of Soka Gakkai, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi. Central to Soka Gakkai's philsophy are the ideas of 'human revolution' (i.e. personal and social transformation) and the Tendai concept of 'one thought, three thousand worlds'. According to Soka Gakkai, human beings can change themselves, and through changing themselves change the world. Change for the better is brought about by chanting the powerful daimoku or title of the Lotus Sutra 'nam-myoho-renge-kyo'. The effect of chanting this phrase, which embodies the essence of the enlightened mind of the Buddha, is radically to elevate one's mental and spiritual state within the 3,000 possible states of mind, which range from the experience of hell to perfect supreme enlightenment. Since 'body and mind are not two' (i.e. they are a unity), the transformation of the 'inner' or mental state is reflected in transformed behaviour and therefore social influence. If enough people practice daimoku whole societies and eventually the whole world will be transformed. History Symbols The central symbol for Soka Gakkai is the gohonzon (object of worship) which comprises a wooden tablet or paper copy of the title of the Lotus Sutra, the daimoku, chanted by believers during their spiritual practice. Nichiren's name is inscribed below the title, which is surrounded by the names of various Buddhist and other Japanese divinities.

Extractions: Nichiren (1222-1282), a learned monk and resolute devotee of the Lotus Sutra (Japanese; Myoho-Renge-Kyo or Hoke-Kyo), preached uncompromisingly against other 'evil' forms of Buddhism, including Zen, Shingon and Pure Land. His aim was to restore pure Tendai teaching, which focused on the Lotus Sutra. According to Chinese thought, the Buddha had gradually revealed more and more of the true Dharma during his life. In Nichiren's view, the Lotus Sutra was the only, not just the final, revelation of the truth. For Nichiren, reciting the mystic phrase 'Namu Myoho Renge Kyo' ('Hail to the Lotus Sutra') was the quintessence of Buddhist practice. If adopted throughout the country it could transform Japan and then the world into a Buddha-land. Nichiren's teachings, though based on a sophisticated knowledge of the Buddhist scriptural tradition, are set out in the form of intriguing vernacular dialogues between a devotee of the Lotus Sutra and an unbeliever, and in letters sent by Nichiren to various disciples during his lifetime. Central to his teaching is the Tendai notion of 'three thousand worlds in one instant of thought'. This conveys the idea that at any moment we can experience hell or, by invoking the power of the Lotus Sutra, the highest enlightenment. Central to Nichiren's doctrine was a mission to convert the shogun, emperor and all the people of Japan to devotion to the Lotus Sutra.

Infighting, Division, and Scandal Afflicting Nichiren Shoshu Buddhists Adherents of the worldwide Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist sect are embroiled in a growing, major dispute that could result in its breakup. At press time the situation was clearly worsening as Nichiren Shoshu high priest Nikken Abe ordered the Soka Gakkai, the lay arm of Nichiren Shoshu, to disband. But according to the November 11, 1991 World Tribune , Soka Gakkai president Einosuke Akiya has refused the November 8 order on the grounds that the Soka Gakkai is an independent religious organization. (The World Tribune is a newspaper published by the U.S. branch of the Soka Gakkai.) The disbandment order was the second major blow against the organization by its priesthood in less than a year. According to the September 1991 Cult Awareness Network News , in December 1990 the priesthood stripped Soka Gakkai leader Diasaku Ikeda of his title as sokoto , head of all Nichiren lay believers.

Web Version SOKA GAKKAI A lay organization of the Nichiren Shoshu (after Nichiren, a thirteenth-century Buddhist evangelist), a sect within Japanese Buddhism. Soka Gakkai was founded in the 1930s by a school-teacher, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi. After World War II, the movement expanded dramatically and quickly became the largest of the new Japanese faiths. In Japan, Soka Gakkai has been associated with the conservative Komeito, or the "Clean Government" party, and with Japanese nationalism. Religious practice, both in Japan and in the United States, emphasizes chanting (diamoku) and intensive efforts directed toward the conversion of new members (shakubuku). Soka Gakkai is evangelistic and its main goal is kosen rufu , or the spreading of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism to promote peace and happiness for all. In the mid-1960s, Soka Gakkai and its U.S. organization, Nichiren Shoshu of America, began to recruit non-Japanese Americans. The organization has since built a significant non-Japanese segment of its membership. Like many new religious movements in the United States in the late 1960s and 1970s, Soka Gakkai initially was able to recruit a fairly large membership, which later declined (Hashimoto and McPherson 1976). Scholarly interest in Soka Gakkai in Japan has focused on its response to a values crisis in Japan after World War II and its political impact (e.g., Solomon 1977). Soka Gakkai in the United States has been examined as one of many new religious movements that arose in the 1960s and 1970s (e.g., Hurst 1992, Hashimoto and McPherson 1976). Of particular note is the Snow and Phillips (1980) study examining the adequacy of the Lofland-Stark conversion model in relation to Soka Gakkai in the United States.

On the one hand, it can provide hard empirical data that are virtually unattainable by other means. But unless it is backed up with more direct qualitative research, survey methodology often leaves the investigator standing on the outside unable to plumb the real depths and complexity of our social life. Hammond and Machacek's new book, Soka Gakkai in America , is an excellent example of how valuable good survey research can be, as well as of its inherent limitations. The most essential practice of Sooka Gakkai Buddhism is chanting centered around veneration of the Lotus Suutra There is little doubt that the demands of the global market are transforming the way we live and the way we think, but it is essential to the future of social science that we maintain a critical distance from these developments. The incredible richness of human behavior cannot be reduced to the mechanical operations of the marketplace. After all, the roots of Buddhism stretch back more than two millennia before the origins of contemporary capitalism to a time when market exchange was of far less importance. Any analysis that reduces religion simply to one more capitalist exchange ignores our deepest spiritual impulses and impoverishes its subject matter.

Reviewed by Jane Hurst jane.hurst@gallaudet.edu Dobbelaere's book Soka Gakkai: From Lay Movement to Religion In later chapters Dobbelaere discusses the characteristics of Soka Gakkai members, including those in Europe; their religious practice of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo ; and the ways the organization supports members' study and practice of Nichiren Buddhism. Most interesting is the way that Soka Gakkai's teachings attract certain sorts of individuals to the movement. In Europe "twenty-percent of the SG membership works in social services and the arts" (p. 31). This Dobbelaere attributes to Nichiren Buddhism's "general ethic" which "stresses the importance of service to others, encourages humanitarian responsibility, and underlines the supreme importance of human life" (pp. 31-32). In general, Soka Gakkai members in America and Europe are found to be "transmodern," a term defined by Hammond and Machacek in their volume
