In 1930 a lay society known as the Soka Gakkai (Value Creating Society) started to spread its teachings. Soka Gakkai was founded by the educators Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda, who had found parallels between Nichiren's teaching and their philosophy of education. They followed in Nichiren's political footsteps, challenged the militaristic government during World War Two and were imprisoned for opposing government interference in religion. Makiguchi, who was the society's first president, died in jail on November 18 1944. After the war, the Japanese constitution allowed freedom of religion for the first time. Toda reconstructed the Soka Gakkai as a movement for people in all aspects of society, not just in education. By the time he died on April 2 1958 the organisation had reached more than 750,000 households and some of its members had been elected to the Japanese Parliament.

It has branches throughout the world, and it is the clearly the biggest Buddhist organization in the United States. Currently, estimates very widely as to the American membership, but the truth is probably somewhere between the 300,000 of Soka Gakkai's official 1997 census and Philip Hammond's conservative estimate of approximately 36,000. Soka Gakkai represents the largest and most ethnically diverse group of Buddhists in the United States. One study in Miami suggests the following: 32.81% of members consider themselves to be Caucasian, 10.94% African American, 10.94% Japanese, 37.5% Hispanic, and 7.81% other. Together, these ethnic groups hold close to a proportional role in the leadership of the organization in the United States. Throughout its history Soka Gakkai has attempted to create a place for itself in the balance between a Nichiren sectarian religious group and a humanistic institution for the educational creation of value. However, the many tensions between Soka Gakkai and the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood led to a break between the two in 1991. At least popularly, this particular issue culminated in the priesthood's anger at the "Ode to Joy" being played at a Soka Gakkai event. Other tensions seem to have resulted from complications concerning charges for priestly rituals and a fear over the growing charisma of Soka Gakkai president Ikeda Daisaku, as well as from the radical increase in religious tolerance under Ikeda's leadership. These differences contributed to a breakdown in the relationship between Soka Gakkai and the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood, which culminated in a massive excommunication of Soka Gakkai by the sect's high priest.

Every day for the past four decades she has chanted part of the Lotus Sutra to pray for happiness. She became a senior member of the regional Hokkaido division, spreading the group's message of peace. But last month Nobuhira, 69, voiced a very different message: she accused Soka Gakkai leader Daisaku Ikeda of rape. Nobuhira filed a 75 million yen civil suit against the 68-year-old Ikeda, alleging that he raped her on three separate occasions and called her "nigo-san," or "my mistress," in front of other followers. "He should not be allowed to speak of salvation or world peace," she says. "He is worse than a beast." David had an easier task when he took on Goliath. Soka Gakkai claims 12 million members inside Japan - a tenth of the population - as well as 1.4 million in 127 other countries. It owns Japan's third largest newspaper, Seikyo Shinbun, as well as Soka University. Its political arm, the now defunct Clean Government Party, has formed the core of the New Frontier Party, which is the government's chief opposition. Ikeda, who has been the top leader of Soka Gakkai for 36 years, is a charismatic figure famous for jetting around the world to hold "dialogues" with such luminaries as John Kenneth Galbraith and Mikhail Gorbachev. The Soka Gakkai leader has been under fire before. Last year he was asked to testify before Parliament after the Liberal Democratic Party proposed setting strict limits for religious groups, following the subway nerve-gas attacks by the Aum Shinrikyo cult. In 1991 the order on which Soka Gakkai is based, Nichiren Buddhism, disowned the lay group over a dispute about priestly authority.

    Extractions: pp. 197-199 Hsi Lai University The reviewed book: Oxford University Press, Oxford, UK 1999 p. 197 In the preface to their book, Phillip Hammond and David Machacek grant that as sociological observers they are 'outsiders' who have no personal experience with Soka Gakkai practices. They state quite candidly that they had the opportunity to p. 198 attend a chanting session but were unable to attentively follow along, even when provided with a simplified phonetic transliteration of the chant. Their situation illustrates a difficulty more apparent than real but one that, nevertheless, prevents many Americans from becoming personally knowledgeable about practices such as those engaged in by members of an essentially Japanese organization like Soka Gakkai. As a result of this gap in personal experience, the authors have been compelled to utilize a 102- question survey to solicit opinions from church members willing to cooperate in providing responses. The authors mainly rely on this opinion survey and some personal interviews for their information. The authors acknowledge that they were paid a total of $28,000 to produce the study but they insist that this small stipend covered only the costs of production and in no way influenced the objectivity of their efforts. Taking them at their word, and recognizing their lack of personal acquaintance with the new Japanese religious organizations, their apparent unfamiliarity with the archaic Japanese renderings of Mahayana Buddhist jargon, and the limited funding available to them, one can understand and not expect too much from the book. The authors, themselves, are at pains throughout the book to point out how much their conclusions rest upon the accuracy and honesty of the responses to their questionnaire. If the reader keeps this simple caveat in mind, then an honest and fair evaluation of the book should be possible.
