This 13th Century Japanese sage centred his philosophy on what is traditionally thought to be one of the last recorded teachings of the first historically recorded Buddha (variously known as Guatama Siddhartha or Shakyamuni Buddha) which was named the Lotus Sutra. The Lotus Sutra declares that all living beings regardless of gender or intellectual capacity, can attain the enlightened state of life within their given lifetime.

Extractions: Name: Soka Gakkai International is the official name of the lay organization of the Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist religion. Founder: Nikko Shonin started the religion in Japan. Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda began the lay group Soka Gakkai, and Masayasu Sadanaga (who changed his name to George M. Williams) began the group in the United States. Date of Births: Not found Years Founded: Shonin founded the group sometime after 1290 by erecting a temple at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The group was relatively small until Makiguchi and Toda formed Soka-kyoiku-gakkai (Value-creating, Education Society) in 1930. Sadanaga brought the religion to the United States (Washington D.C.) in 1957. Brief History: Nichiren Daishonin (the Great Holy One) (1222-1282) was a Buddhist reformer who believed that a greater Buddha than Sakyamuni would redeem earth. When he died, some of his followers were chosen to protect and upkeep his tomb. After a dispute over the responsibility, Nikko Shonin left the group and established a temple, Taiseki-ji, at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The religion lived, in small numbers, until Makiguchi, at odds with the Japanese government (who held as a state religion, Shintoism), established the Soka Gakkai. He was arrested for his beliefs and died in jail. Toda became president of the group and rallied 300,000 peasants at Makiguchi's funeral. The religion rapidly developed a large lay membership. The group grew in Japan under the leadership of Toda.

It's like these good Christian beliefs that I grew up on, and I just don't need that in my adult life...Buddhism, not chanting, is a way of life; Buddhism takes years. It's pretentious to call yourself a Buddhist just because you chant. So what does all this mean? The abilities of chanting as a valid form of spiritual development is not the issue here; all of the Nichiren sects chant as do members of the Pure Land, and chanting predates recorded history. At question is the belief that worship of a relic, allegedly entrusted with magical powers, can bring material gain. At issue here is the question of whether one allies oneself with an organization which stresses that only its beliefs and its beliefs alone are correctan organization which subjugates the individual's development of an independent, well informed political and social conscience and substitutes the organizational point of viewor if one should strive for spiritual development on one's own, placing morality above materialism. It is a question that each of the organization's followers would do well to search their own hearts for an answer to.

Its parent organization, the Soka Gakkai (Value Creation Society) was founded in 1930 and achieved phenomenal growth in the postwar era under its second president, Josei Toda. Under the Soka Gakkai's third president Daisaku Ikeda, currently the president of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI), an umbrella organization that links the organizations of 115 countries with 14 million members. The SGI is recognized as an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) by the United Nations. It has participated in and supported many U.N. activities. Since 1982, the SGI has co-sponsored several exhibitions with the U.N. in dozens of cities around the world on topics such: Nuclear Arms, Global War, Human Rights, Children's Rights and the Environment. The purpose of these exhibitions is to call attention to the need for pooling our wisdom to find solutions to the global problems that confront us. The Youth in the organization have also been involved with campaigns to aid refugees of various countries. SGI President Daisaku Ikeda has also founded 7 educational institutions including Soka University , the Min-on Concert Organization, and the Fuji Art Museum , He has received awards and honorary degrees from institutions and universities around the world, including the United Nations Peace Award, the Rosa Parks Humanitarian Award and has submitted proposals for nuclear disarmament to the U.N. yearly since 1960. And we have all probably experienced just how hard this can be, whether in explaining our Buddhist practice to our family members or in discussing matters regarding Nichiren Shoshu. We have worked especially hard over the last several years to find the best words to spell out the temple issue: the SGI's stance toward Nichiren Shoshu's determined efforts to confuse people about Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. Sometimes we have used language that has been too emotional, and our point has been lost on our listeners. Other times, we have not emphasized the seriousness of the issue enough; our way of introducing it has caused people to see it as unrelated to their daily practice. We have learned that there are certain words and terms that we must be careful to explain fully or use sparingly or even avoid. If we say that the priesthood is evil, for instance, it helps to explain what we mean each time by the word evil; we have to share how the Daishonin uses this word to refer to priests who promote distorted versions of Buddhism.
