(Punjabi is spoken by roughly 5,600 people in New Zealand) The Sikh migration to New Zealand is already more than 100 years old. The first Sikh came to New Zealand in 1890. The Sikh population in New Zealand is estimated to be approximately 5,200. Worldwide Sikh population is 24 million. It is the fifth largest religion in the world. The Gurudwara in Wellington is the southern most Gurudwara of the world.

In its simplest form, Sikhism represents a spiritual path to God and a just social order for all. The religion was founded in India by Guru Nanak in the form of ten Gurus (1469-1708). The tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh proclaimed the eleventh and last Guru as the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the revered Holy scriptures of the Sikhs.The teachings that the Gurus gave to this world came to them directly from God. THE SIKH GREETING Whenever a Sikh meets another Sikh, they greet each other with folded hands saying: Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh The Khalsa (Sikh) belongs to the Glorious Master (God), all triumph to His Name. WHO IS A SIKH? A sikh is a person who believes in one God and the teachings of all the ten Gurus and Sri Guru Granth Sahib alike. He believes in the Amrit prepared by Guru Gobind Singh Ji (the tenth Guru). A Sikh who has taken Gods amrit must wear five articles of faith all the time. Each one begins with the letter K and are thus called the 5 Ks. These are:

In the past several years, the Gurmat Studies Foundation has worked extensively within the worldwide Sikh community organizing camps, retreats with English katha, Gurbani kirtan , and demonstrations on Gurmat philosophy, Sikh history and lifestyle, Sikh martial arts, and Gurbani meanings. Main projects of the Gurmat Studies Foundation have included the Guru Nanak Academy and the Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Gatka Akhara , located in Surrey, BC and established in September, 2003. In addition, sevadars of the Gurmat Studies Foundation have given speeches at interfaith conferences , conducted various gurmat camps and retreats , as well as English katha tours, and written educational materials on Sikh history.

It preaches a message of devotion and remembrance of God at all times, truthful living, equality of mankind and denounces superstitions and blind rituals. Sikhism is open to all through the teachings of its ten Gurus enshrined in the Sikh Holy Book and Living Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Sikhism is an Indian religion combining Islamic and Hindu elements, founded in the Punjab (Panjab) in the late 15th century AD by Nanak. Sikhs consider themselves disciples of Nanak and his nine successors, who are called the Ten Gurus. The writings of the early Gurus were compiled in the Adi Granth, the Sikh sacred book, by Arjun (1563-1606), the fifth Guru. After Arjun's execution by the Mughal emperor, the Sikhs began to change from a pacifist to a militant sect, a process that culminated under the 10th Guru, Gobind Rai (1666-1708). It was he who founded the fraternity known as the 'Khalsa' (Pure), which has remained the principal Sikh order. Its members adopted the additional name Singh (Lion) or Kaur (Lioness) and observed a strict discipline. Gobind Singh (as Gobind Rai was renamed) lost all his four sons in his lifetime and declared the succession of Gurus at an end.
