In reality it was an elaborate lampstand, set on the south side of the Holy Place so as to face the loaves of proposition. It was beaten out of finest gold. A central shaft, together with three pairs of branches curving upward from out of the shaft, all exquisitely ornamented and surmounted with stands, held in a line the seven golden lamps that gave light to the sanctuary. The priests dressed the lamps in the morning and set them on the lampstand in the evening (Exodus 30:7, 8). All night long the seven lamps were kept burning (Exodus 27:20-21; Leviticus 24:3; I Kings 3:3). As for the day, Josephus (Antiq. Jud., III, viii, 3) tells us that three lamps were lighted. Levites of the family of Caath cared for the golden lampstand on the march (Numbers 3:31). It was among the spoils brought by Vespasian and Titus to grace their triumph at Rome, and may be seen sculptured upon the Arch of Titus. WALTER DRUM

This book consists of two volumes - "The Elven Blade" and "The Black Spear", which make up the "Ring of Darkness". It is open to members of the II*+ members of the Temple of Set who have been Recognized to the Degree of Adept. Setne Khamuast was the fourth son of Ramses II. As a soldier he distinguished himself in the campaigns in Israel and the Sudan. He is perhaps the author of the famed lost papyrus, "Scroll of Producing Terror and Respect" mentioned in the story of Ramses III. As an Egyptologist he began a careful series of diggings to claim back from the sand the monuments that were lost, and more importantly he created a magical library, the Ramuessum, to serve as the mortuary chapel of his father. The gathering of scrolls in a centralized place for study was a first and changed Egyptian and eventually world magical practice. Because of his interest in magical literature, the Greeks called him "King of the Magicians" and a story circulated about him a thousand years after his death as to how he had found the "Book of Toth."

The initiatory path taught and practiced within the Order of Xnum is one of ascent from the sensual (=realm of five senses and four dimensions) to the intelligible (=realm of abstract knowledge and ageless intelligence - nous theos ), each initiate's daimon acting as personal guide and informant along the way. This path of ascent is the common thread which unifies the diverse cultural streams and is the foundation of Order teaching. This teaching is imparted mouth to ear from the Grand Master to a select body of students, truth seekers who are predisposed to hear the Word. Some students in turn become teachers ( didaskalos ) who make use of the therapy of the Word, which includes (operative) incantations, spells, as well as (illustrative) theological and philosophical discourse. It is because of this that the Order of Xnum can be said to be a true Hermetic Order, in the spirit of those magicians of the first four centuries CE who referred to their spirituality as "the religion of the Mind."
