Sitemap The original federal complaint in this case was filed on June 4, 1999 by Midrash Sephardi and Young Israel of Bal Harbor, two small Orthodox Jewish congregations formed in the 1990s. Both were meeting in space on the second floor of a bank building at 9592 Harding Avenue in Surfside's B-1 zoning district. The dispute had began on May 28, 1999 in state court, when Surfside sought to enjoin the congregations from using the premises as synagogues and enforce $1,000 a day fines. Surfside permits churches and synagogues in only one of the town's eight zoning districts (RD-1, two-family residential), and even there only after issuance of a Conditional Use Permit (CUP). Initially, plaintiffs challenged the constitutionality of the portion of the ordinance setting out procedures for obtaining a CUP, but the challenge was dismissed for lack of standing. (They had not applied for a CUP, on grounds that there was "a substantial likelihood that it will be enforced against the plaintiffs based on Surfside's conduct to date.") Religious assembly uses are prohibited in the other seven zoning districts, even though other private clubs and other non-religious assembly uses are permitted. In an order issued on July 13, 2000, the court held that the zoning ordinance was facially neutral and that there was no evidence of discriminatory purpose or intent in creation of the code, and dismissed the plaintiff's equal protection claim.

The building has a nice set back position from the road and has palm trees at its doorstep. The community and its History began in 1965. A few Sephardim came together in order to establish a Sephardi community and Synagogue in a community that is predominately Askenazi. They had a thirst for the Sephardi traditions and a yearning to pass on their cultural individuality to their children through a communal center and Synagogue. For the next twelve years they hired halls and turned them into places of worship for the High holidays. Sefarim were obtained from Baghdad, Singapore, Canada, South America and Israel.

Suzie Gold Sephardi Jews In the strictest sense, Sephardic Jews, also called Sephardim are Jews who are descendants of Jews who were expelled from Spain and Portugal and who settled in southern France, Italy, North Africa, Turkey, Asia Minor, the Netherlands, England, North and South America, Germany, Denmark, Austria, and Hungary. However, in modern times the name is also commonly used for Jews from many communities, notably those of Yemen and Iraq, not significantly derived from Spain or Portugal. Jews from those other communities are also sometimes called "Oriental (Eastern) Jews" or the Hebrew equivalent "Mizrakhim". In the past, Jews from old communities in Arab countries were often called "Arab Jews", but that phrase is rarely used today. Dialect The dialect of many Sephardic Jews in Portugal, Brazil and Turkey is Judaeo-Spanish, also called Ladino (considered in some circles to be a pejorative term), Judezmo, Spanyol or Sefardites. Among the Sephardim were many who were the descendants, or heads, of wealthy families and who, as Marranos, had occupied prominent positions in the countries they had left. Some had been state officials, others had held positions of dignity within the Church; many had been the heads of large banking-houses and mercantile establishments, and some were physicians or scholars who had officiated as teachers in high schools.

While his story could be told in sundry fashion by other Shanghai refugees living here, Nissim's account differs from most because he was a third-generation Shanghai resident. His family was part of a banking clan of Jews from India. The original 19th-century clan prospered in the Far East after investing in the tea, real estate and later opium trade. They built synagogues, hotels, roads and schools, Nissim said in an interview. The region's Sephardim, mainly Baghdadi's, numbered close to 2,000 at their peak, according to Nissim. By the end of World War II, Shanghai was also home to 7,000 Russian Jews and 22,000 Jews from throughout Europe. Nissim will join about 17 family members Thursday, November 12 for the opening of the Hoover Institution exhibit. The display includes his family's papers and photos documenting the Sephardim's little known history in Shanghai. 'I didn't feel qualified to talk about the era before now', said Nissim, who left China at age 26. After recently published histories of Shanghai's Jews raised much interest locally, the modest 75-year-old said he's ready to divulge his past.

Previous to his conversion he was known as Moses Sephardi (the Spaniard). King Alfonso I of Aragon, whose physician-in-ordinary he became, stood sponsor at his baptism, which he received in his native town on St. Peter's day (29 June, 1106). In honour of this saint and of his sponsor he chose the name Petrus Alfonsus. As his conversion was attributed by his former co-religionists to ignorance or dishonourable motives, he published a justification in a Latin work consisting of twelve dialogues between a Jew and a Christian . These dialogues were first printed at Cologne in 1536, and have since frequently been re-edited. A second work of Petrus Alfonsus, based on Arabic sources, is entitled "Ecclesiastical Discipline" (Disciplina Clericalis). It has been translated into several languages and is preserved in numerous manuscripts. Labouderie, Vicar-General of Avignon , published it at Paris in 1824 with a French translation of the fifteenth century. Another edition by F. W. V. Schmidt appeared at Berlin in 1827. The text of both works of Petrus Alfonsus, preceded by biographical notices, may be found in Migne, CLVII, 527-706.

The word "Sephardim" comes from the Hebrew term for Spain, Sepharad , used in the Bible It is believed that Jews have lived in Spain since the era of King Solomon (c.965-930 B.C.E.). Little information can be found on these Jews until the beginning of the first century. We do know that in 305 CE, the Council of Toledo passed an edict forbidding Jews from blessing the crops of non-Jews and prohibiting Jews and non-Jews from eating together. In 409 CE, the Visigoths (Aryan Christians) conquered Spain and treated the Jews harshly. A canon was passed in 589 prohibiting the marriage of Jews and non-Jews. In 612, the Council of Toledo ordered the baptism of all Jews to take place with the next year. The practice of Judaism was outlawed in the Visigoth kingdom. The situation improved in 711 when Spain fell under the rule of the Muslim Moors. Both

A wonderful evening of choral music was presented by the choir of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews' Congregation of London on the evening of 4 December 2004. As an Ashkenazi Jew many of the tunes were unfamiliar (with some interesting exceptions!) but the message was not. Ive always known Adon Olam can be sung to just about any tune (my favourite is to William Blakes Jerusalem try it, it works), but hearing it sung on the Bimah by a barbershop quintet (not quartet) to the tune of 'Rhapsody in Blue' and 'Way down upon the Swanee River' was something else! The highlight for me was 'El Norah' sung in front of the Ark by the wonderful choir. The traditions of the Spanish and Portuguese (Sephardi) Jews go back to before the tragic expulsion from Spain in 1492. This concert was a living link to those days. Pease enjoy my attempt to convey the magic of the evening through my photos.
