Extractions: 1855 QUAKER MEETING HOUSE Just outside the main entrance to Longwood Gardens near Route 1 is the historic 1855 Longwood Meeting House, which now houses a Tourist Information Center (see Map ). The building was purchased in 1940 by Pierre du Pont and has belonged to Longwood ever since, but it was constructed 85 years earlier as a Quaker Meeting House. Its early years were turbulent and closely intertwined with the Religious Society of Friends and with the celebrated Underground Railroad. The Religious Society of Friends George Fox established the Religious Society of Friends in mid 17th-century England. Through his own Christian soul searching, Fox made a radical discovery: God lives in and talks directly to everyone. It was apparent to Fox that something of the Divine is implanted in each human being. From this originated the Quaker phrase, "There is that of God in every person." This Spirit is also referred to as the "Light" or the "Inner Light." The term "Quaker" was first used by an English magistrate as one of contempt and derision. During a sentencing, George Fox bade the court to "tremble at the word of the Lord." The magistrate labeled Fox a "Quaker." The official name for the movement, however, is the Religious Society of Friends.

Off street parking is available behind the meeting house. There is wheelchair access. Our meeting house has a small lending library, and there are on-site accommodations for Friends traveling on Friends' business. Tradition of Worship: The Orlando Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends is unprogrammed in its form of worship. There is no sermon or ritual. Those attending sit in silent stillness - open to the leading of the Spirit. When moved to speak a person will make a statement of ministry. Others may also be led to speak. After about an hour the meeting is concluded with people shaking hands with others nearby.

It is now usually published as an insert in their bulletin, Friends World News . If you do not get that publication, you can send a self-addressed stamped long envelope to your nearest FWCC office for a copy of the printed Calendar. Founded by George Fox in seventeenth-century England, the Friends quickly met with persecution for their refusal to bear arms, take oaths, and pay tithes. Less than a quarter-century after the Society was founded, Friends began leaving England for the religious freedom of America. More than one third of those originally purchasing land in Burlington had been fined or imprisoned for their beliefs in England. Even as their ship, the Kent, sailed down the Thames River, King Charles II boarded it from his royal barge and wished them a safe voyage. As the King's own laws led to much of the abuse the Quakers received in England, this blessing is usually viewed as a polite "go away," at best. Extractions: Friends: Who We Are The Religious Society of Friends, more commonly known as Quakers, began in the religious ferment of England in the 1600s. The basis of all Quaker beliefs is the presence of "that of God" in everyone. Everyone has an "Inner Light" for guidance. Though many choose to ignore it, it is always there to be reached. Though clearly Christian, the early Friends would quote the Koran when speaking with Turks because of the belief that other peoples who also had access to the Inner Light would understand better if spoken to in terms they understood. The Quaker response to those in positions of power who are not willing to listen, even to those who are brutal and insensitive, is a practice called "Speaking Truth to Power," which holds that everyone contains a spark that can be reached with prophetic voices. The Quaker method of worship involves the use of silence so that people can "center down" and be attuned to the Inner Light. Friends sit together in a Meeting for Worship, and speaking occurs when someone is moved of the Spirit to speak. The silence that follows the message is part of the message, to give others a chance to contemplate the point just made. There is no minister or, more accurately, everybody is a minister. All are equally invited to contribute to the spiritual journey of the group. Pastoral work and administrative work are done by committees and by a monthly Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business, which all can attend. Decisions are made by consensus of the group, so that there is no tyranny of the majority and the consciences of all individuals are respected. The Meeting is the group, analagous to a church, and Meetings are associated in larger geographical groups which meet yearly (hence, the Yearly Meeting).

Table of Contents Description The Religious Society of Friends, called Quakers by both members and nonmembers, was founded by English preacher George Fox in the mid-17th century. More Puritan than Anglican in religious belief, Fox quickly moved beyond Puritan teaching to a belief that the established church and its hierarchy, priests and rituals were unnecessary to relations between humans and God. He preached of a faith based on what he called the inner light Gods inspirational influence in everyone and he regarded personal experience with God as the only source of religious authority. The theme of Quakerism is Trust in the Light, that is, Gods presence within us, teaching, guiding and directing our conscience. Working as an itinerant preacher in the England and Scotland of Oliver Cromwells Puritan dictatorship, Fox and his message were welcomed by Puritans chafing under strict domination by their own clergy. Within a few years, his associates, including both male and female preachers called the Publishers of Truth, were coalescing as the Society of Friends. Fox preached not only of religion freed from the constraints of Churches and priests but of people embracing pacifism and religious tolerance and freed from the constraints and control of governments. Because of his anti-establishment teachings, he was frequently jailed, along with members of the Society of Friends, who were soon colloquially called Quakers because of their preaching that all should tremble before God. When the British monarchy was restored in 1660, persecution of Quakers became even more severe than it had been under the Puritans, leading to their early involvement in emigration to the American colonies. Ultimately, the passage of the Toleration Act in 1689 gave them relief from persecution, but the resurgence of the Anglican Church under the monarchy, as well as unofficial intolerance, limited opportunities for growth of the faith.
