Its rise and fall is typical of such movements. A Historical Sketch of the Brethren Movement In 1825 Cronin and one other man were denounced by the local Protestant churches in Dublin for their opposition to the concept of the one-man ministry. They began meeting together for the "breaking of bread" and prayer, and thus began the Brethren movement. That little meeting grew, and word spread of this "new idea." Within a few years a number of other little groups had sprung up on a similar basis. "There was no attempt at first to enforce uniformity of procedure in these meetings, and if I may be allowed to record here my profound conviction as to the chief cause of the apparent failure of the testimony of the Brethren and their eventual breakup into many different groups, I should say that it was through their failing to maintain the principle that unity is not necessarily uniformity. If the Brethren had been content to allow the Spirit of God to have [its] own way in each place, and had not made the attempt to enforce common methods of procedure and church order upon the assemblies as they did some years afterwards, they might have still presented a marvelous testimony to the unity of the Spirit" (p. 20). John Nelson Darby was later to become one of the most noted leaders of the Brethren movement. In 1827 he wrote:

They are four: first, "The moral law is not the rule of Christian life"; secondly, "The doctrine of imputed righteousness"; thirdly, "Abraham has no place in the church, nor could any saint have till the Holy Ghost came after the ascension"; fourthly, "Sanctification," which is treated by Mr. Marshall in his remarks on imputed righteousness. There are other collateral points, as ordination to ministry, praying for the Holy Ghost, the sabbath, which I may touch on: the latter will come naturally under the head of law, and our deliverance from it. Our subjection to the law is a capital point. But the whole principle on which Scripture places the question is unknown to the writer of the pamphlet; namely, that the law has power over a man as long as he lives, but that we have died in Christ, and are not looked at as being in the flesh at all; not in the first Adam, but in the Last. Romans 3: 20, 21. "Therefore by the deeds of the law shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets."

Feedback Assembly Reflections Assembly Reflections by Margaret Irons Many people who were in George's Assemblies have great loyalty and affection for the ideal of the simplicity of New Testament gathering. There is a strong conviction that it is the Biblical way for the church to meet. Steve and I have a lot of sympathy for those folks. We were married at Westmoreland Chapel, and still keep in touch with friends there. Westmoreland and the Assemblies are both offshoots of the Plymouth Brethren movement which began in the nineteenth century under J. N. Darby. A look at the early history of the Brethren is instructive for us from the Assemblies, because it shows that there were weaknesses in the outworking of the ideal of New Testament simplicity, particularly as it developed in the branch of the Brethren known as the Exclusives At this point, I can hear some readers deciding to read no further, because they think this will be a biased attack on the Assemblies. This article is not an attack, it is an attempt to let history speak, and to learn from it. In several ways, the Brethren history has been already been repeated in the Assemblies. If loyalty to the Brethren ideal prevents people from taking an honest look, the Assemblies might continue to repeat it.

His parents belonged to the Exclusive Plymouth Brethren â a separatist religious sect whose elders maintained strict control over their followers, not allowing marriage to outsiders and disapproving of anything other than minimal contact between the Brethren and the general public. They were also committed pacifists; during World War One Alecâs father and uncle were âconscientious objectorsâ, refusing to bear arms against their fellow men. Nevertheless they did participate â as non-combatant ambulance crew â a hazardous occupation that called for great courage (see picture below). As he went through his teenage years in the 1930s, Alec became increasingly disillusioned with the constraints the sect put upon his activities and when it became obvious that war was imminent with a militaristic Germany under the evil influence of the Nazis, he found himself at odds with the Brethrenâs uncompromising pacifism.

As the movement spread, a large group of adherents assembled in Plymouth by which is why Brethren are often called by that name. In the late , a difference over the "independence" of local meetings resulted in the first division, causing a distinction to be made between the Open Brethren mainly referred to by the name Plymouth Brethren , and the Exclusive Brethren . Darby and his followers saw the split as the result of the growth of ' clericalism ' and "grave error as to Christ's persona and sufferings". Open Brethren remain loosely affiliated and over the years have come to resemble Protestant evangelical churches in doctrine, except that there are no officially recognized clergy and the Lord's Supper is celebrated weekly - both of which are common to open and exclusive groups alike.

A MOVEMENT of GOD Almost two centuries ago, the Holy Spirit moved on the hearts of godly men and women who were a part of denominational systems. Some of them were prominent leaders in church, government and society. This movement was not of men. There is ample evidence that it was of God. Formal religion had in many cases become little more than a pretense. Many claimed church membership without salvation. Spiritual minds rejected the dead formalism, mere ritualism and a clergy without Christ. They searched the Scriptures, often on their knees, to know what God would have them do. What they discovered was the simplicity of an assembly that gathered to the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. It was a mighty awakening by the Spirit in their hearts.
