The Plymouth Brethren (often known throughout the world as Assemblies or Gospel Halls) are a small groups of Christians with a deep and rich history. The PBs should not be confused with any "Brethren" out of the Continental Free Church tradition, (such as the Church of the Brethren, Brethren Church, etc.), nor the Arminian Pentecostal Assemblies of God. For decades, the PBs reached out with their various needs to brother Miles Stanford by telephone and letter, yet often in pride and denial that they could be helped or ministered to by someone "outside" their Assembly system. However, it is often only an outsider who is in a position to evaluated conditions as they truly are, rather than how insiders represent them to be. Miles' burden was always that the PBs would discover the rich legacy of Pauline Dispensationalism established by the original founders of the movement. Extractions: A Brief Outline of the Plymouth Brethren: History, Doctrines, and Practices Dr. Sunny Ezhumattoor( John Mathew Thekkel) M.A.,Ph.d. The Plymouth Brethren movement was an independent work of the Holy Spirit, which is apparent from the fact that, in A. D. 1812 and 1820, letters were passed between a company of believers in Great Britain. The Brethren believe that they represent the true church established on the day of Pentecost. The two guiding principles of the movement were to be the breaking of bread every Lords Day, and ministry based upon the call of Christ rather than the ordination of men. They follow and obey the Scripture, refusing to follow human tradition and creed. Others call them Brethren, but they prefer to be called Christians. Doctrine and Practices The Brethren seek to assemble in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and to maintain the apostolic pattern and simplicity which marked the churches of the days of the apostles (Romans 12:4-8). We honor the Lord Jesus and worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24). The Church began with the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and is composed of all true believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. These believers are united to Him and to one another by the indwelling Spirit. This means that the Church, as a whole, is not an organization, but a living organism, known as the body of Christ. Every true child of God possesses eternal life, and being justified, sanctified, and sealed with the Holy Spirit, is safe and secure for all eternity. However, a Christian can, through sin, lose his fellowship, joy, power, testimony, and reward, thus incurring the Fathers chastisement. Relationship is eternal, being established by new birth; fellowship, however, is dependent upon obedience.

About The Author Introduction The Brethren , or 'Christian Brethren' , take this name because they prefer to be known by a designation comprehensive enough to embrace all their fellow-Christians. There are two main groupings among them, commonly described as 'Open Brethren' and 'Exclusive Brethren' . The terms 'Open' and 'Exclusive' are intended to denote their respective principles of communion. These pages are concerned only with the people called 'Open Brethren'; the writer has no authority to write about his 'Exclusive' friends. It may be useful to make one point in this connection, however. During the last year or two considerable publicity has been given in British newspapers to the withdrawal of a number of people called Brethren from various business and professional associations, and from Universities.
