Other items include 14 original letters of James Hutton (1715-1795), founder of the Moravian Church in England, 1774-1784, and the journal of Christian Ignatius Latrobe (1758-1836) for 1788-9 and 1792. The latter provides valuable insights into the state of the continental Brethren, Moravian missionary work, and the anti-slavery movement. There are also several hundred printed volumes, including a number of rare periodicals on Moravian subjects or by Moravian authors, from Libbeys collection and other sources, 17th-19th centuries. Extractions: General Information The Moravian Church is a Protestant communion closely linked to Lutheranism. It has its roots in the Czech Reformation and is a direct continuation of the Bohemian Brethren. Influenced by the spiritual heritage of John Huss, Brother Gregory founded the Bohemian Unity of Brethren, which, having functioned within the Utraquist group of Hussites for a decade, separated in 1467 and established an independent ministry. The reform movement based itself solely on the Bible, and its leaders were able to procure non Roman ordination from a bishop of the Waldenses. BELIEVE web-site Our List of 1,000 Religious Subjects E-mail Occasional persecution of the Unity became systematic in the 16th century, a period marked by the theological creativity of Lukas of Prague (c. 1460 - 1528) and Jan Augusta (1500 - 72) and by contact with other Protestant reformers. Toleration obtained in 1609 was short lived as the Czech Protestants were expelled by Catholic advances in the Thirty Years' War (1627). John Amos Comenius, the Unity's last bishop, led the group into exile. A century later, representatives of German Pietism encouraged survivors of the Unity to migrate from Moravia to Saxony, where in 1722 the community of Herrnhut was founded. Graf von Zinzendorf assumed leadership, and a spiritual awakening swept the congregation in 1727, which is often taken as the founding date of the Moravian Church. The Moravians were pioneers in Protestant home and foreign missions, seeking renewal of European Christianity and the evangelization of the non Christian world. August Gottlieb Spangenberg, sent to America in 1735, founded churches in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. Zinzendorf stimulated the church by his missionary leadership and religious genius, especially in community formation and cultic celebration. He also troubled the church with financial instability and devotional excesses that nearly wrecked it in the 1740s. After his death more moderate leadership was introduced by Spangenberg.

As Rome began to gain more influence in these areas, John Hus (1369-1415) began to lead a reformation movement against the Roman Catholic Church. He was burned at the stake as a heretic in 1415. Contrary to the Rome's goal, his death became a rallying point for the reformation movement. The Moravian Church or Unitas Fratrum (Unity of Brethren) was born of his ashes in 1457 east of Prague at the estate of Lititz. In less than 100 years, by 1517 the Moravian Church had over 200,000 followers and a Bible in their own language. Due to religious persecution, by 1557 there was a branch of the Church in Poland.

However, they have both inherited much that is common and it is on this basis that the two churches have come together to work towards visible unity. In 1985 the Moravian Church approached the Church of England, suggesting the setting up of Conversations. From 1989 to 1995 delegates from both churches met and through their Conversations achieved significant theological convergence and acknowledgement of each other as churches with authentic ministries and sacraments and identified ways in which they could commit themselves to grow together. The Fetter Lane Common Statement was agreed on 19 May 1995 at the Fetter Lane Moravian Church in Chelsea. It is hoped that the agreement between the Anglican Church in England and the Moravian Church in Great Britain and Ireland will serve as a basis for progress towards visible unity between Anglicans and Moravians in other countries where the traditions exist alongside each other.

Extractions: The Movarian Church: John Hus (Jan Hus) JOHN HUS (Jan Hus) was born sometime around 1372 in the town of Husinec, Bohemia, in the area that is now the Czech Republic. He studied theology at the University of Prague; after his ordination as a priest (1402), he became preacher at the Bethlehem Chapel in Prague. Services at the Bethlehem Chapel were conducted in Czech, contrary to the common practice of conducting services in Latin. The Bible was read and sermons were preached in the common language. Hus was intrigued by the writings of the early English reformer John Wycliffe, though he did not agree with all Wycliffe's teachings. Hus preached actively against the worst abuses of the Roman Church of the day. His primary teachings were: - Hus called for a higher level of morality among the priesthood. Financial abuses, sexual immorality, and drunkenness were common among the priests of Europe. - Hus called for preaching and Bible reading in the common language, and for all Christians to receive full communion. At the time, laypersons received only the bread during communion, and only priests were allowed to receive the wine. - Hus opposed the sale of indulgences. These were documents of personal forgiveness from the Pope which were sold for sometimes exorbitant prices to raise funds for Crusades.

Extractions: Settlement The Fairfield Moravian Settlement is situated in a heavily built-up area south-west of the centre of Droylsden in the Tameside district of Greater Manchester about four miles east of the city centre of Manchester. The Moravian Church is one of the smaller religious bodies in Britain; but with a long and honorable history. It is the oldest Free Church in Northern Europe, being a Reformed Church sixty years before the Reformation. It was founded in 1457, arising out of the work of John Hus, the Bohemian martyr, who himself was inspired by the Englishman John Wyclif. After flourishing in Moravia and Bohemia as the 'Unitas Fratrum', it was almost wiped out during the Thirty Years War. A hidden seed survived however, and fled into Saxony where refuge was found with the generous and pious Count Zinzendorf under whose leadership the Church was renewed in 1722. The Moravians as this 'Church of the Brotherhood' came to be known, took an active part in the evangelical revival in England during the 18th century, being closely associated for a time with John Wesley. Theirs was also the first Protestant body to venture out as a church in 1732 on foreign missions. As an international church it co-operates in this work today with its sister branches on the Continent and in America. In England it stands in friendly relations with the Anglican and the Free Churches. Moravians have no doctrinal peculiarities to propagate. Their emphasis is on Christian life and fellowship.
