Our History The International Church of the Foursquare Gospel (ICFG) was founded on January 1, 1923 by Evangelist and Pastor, Aimee Semple McPherson, with the opening of Angeles Temple in Los Angeles, California. "Sister Aimee" was an innovative and popular leader whose message emphasized Jesus Christ and four areas of His ministry. This message became known as the "Foursquare Gospel." In the 1920s the term "Foursquare" meant something that was thorough and true. Thus the term was used to describe Jesus full and balanced message of good news. Today the Foursquare Gospel is stronger than ever, advancing the full truth and balance of Jesus message throughout the world. Our President On April 16, 1998, Dr. Paul Risser, previously Senior Pastor of the Florence Avenue Foursquare Church, was selected to serve for the next four years as president. From 1959 to 1998, Paul and his wife Marilee served as ministers of several churches in California and Texas. At various times, covering a period of 25 years, Paul has served on the denominations Board of Directors, LIFE Bible College, the Foursquare Cabinet and as the Chairman of the Foursquare Missions Council.

An effervescent young woman was escorted from the darkness of a clear California evening into the studio at the Oakland Rockridge radio station. Once inside the building, she found herself in a strange world filled with glowing vacuum tubes and humming electrical transformers, interconnected by miles of wires. She surveyed her eerie surroundings. Beyond the riser on which she stood sat a small studio audience. In the back of the room a newspaper cameraman sent to cover this important event paced the floor. At her side sat the requisite radio engineer, his eyes riveted on the large clock on the wall. Meanwhile, in the comfort of their homes, thousands of listeners anxiously awaited the start of the female speaker's message. Entire families gathered in their parlors. Some fiddled with the knobs on their console-sized radios, hoping to find a quiet spot among the crackles, pops and the squeals so prevalent in those early days of radio. Finally, the second hand stood straight up, and the radio operator pointed to the woman, the signal indicating the start of the program. She stepped up to the large black horn attached to the microphone, cleared her throat, and began to speak forcefully. At that moment Aimee Semple McPherson became the first woman in history to preach a sermon over the "wireless telephone."

"Foursquare" is a Biblical term used to describe the tabernacle in the Book of Exodus, the Temple of the Lord in Ezekiel 40:47, and Heaven, as described in the Book of Revelation. Early in the 20th century, the term "foursquare" was often used to describe something or someone that was highly respected. It meant "solid", "balanced", "true". The term "Foursquare Gospel" was given as an inspiration to the denomination's founder, Aimee Semple McPherson , during an evangelistic campaign in Oakland, California in 1922. It represents that which is equally balanced on all sides, established and enduring. It also represents the four critical roles filled only by Jesus Christ: the Redeemer, the Great Physician, the Baptizer with the Holy Spirit, and the Coming King.

Extractions: The early 20th century evangelist, Aimee Semple McPherson, was a pioneer of women in ministry. She was born in Salford, Ontario, Canada on October 9, 1890. Having experienced a profound spiritual conversion at age seventeen, Aimee began preaching across the United States and eventually around the world. In 1918, she established her base of ministry in Los Angeles, California, where in 1923, the 5500 seat Angelus Temple was dedicated and became the center of her revival, healing and benevolent ministries. She was the first woman to receive an FCC radio license and was a pioneer religious broadcaster. Her sermons were the first to incorporate the contemporary communications of that day such as drama. From Angeles Temple she operated an extensive social ministry, providing daily hot meals for more than 1.5 million people during the Great Depression. She summarized her message into four major points which became known as the "The Foursquare Gospel," and founded a family of churches around the world known as Foursquare Gospel Churches. The Foursquare Gospel Church of Canada is one of the national churches belonging to this family. The Church of the Four-Square Gospel was founded by Aimee Semple McPherson (1890-1944) in Los Angeles in 1918. At the age of seventeen, she had been questioning her parents' Methodism and declared herself an atheist. However, she attended a Holy Ghost Revival where she heard the preaching of Robert Semple, an Irish evangelist. At this time, she fell in love both with Semple and with his message. Semple and Aimee were married on August 12, 1908, but the relationship would not last because Robert died just two years later. After another four years, she married Harold McPherson - a man who was looking for a very traditional marriage and traditional wife, but that was not to be. They ended up divorcing and Aimee opened the Angelus Temple in Los Angeles, started a radio station, opened a Bible college - all of which would become the foundation for her Four-Square Gospel Church.
