Extractions: Why UU Humanism Requires Rejecting Our Humanity By David R. Burton This essay discusses humanist beliefs, the rise of humanism within Unitarianism, and why those beliefs require the rejection of our humanity. Introduction When we think about what it means to be human, about the things that differentiate us from inanimate objects or lower life-forms, we think about our capacity to reason, to exercise our freedom to make choices, our capacity to recognize right from wrong, our capacity to love and to create and appreciate beauty. It is these things that make us human. It is these things that constitute our humanity. It is the contention of this essay that UU humanism necessarily requires the rejection of our humanity. The humanism that is now such an integral part of Unitarian Universalism, the humanism that has marginalized Christian and other theist thinking within Unitarianism and Universalism, necessarily and logically requires the rejection of the proposition that there is such a thing as right and wrong, the denial of our ability to make choices, and necessitates the view that love and beauty are not real. It is only by embracing the reality of God that we may retain our humanity, our capacity for moral choices, for love and for the aesthetic appreciation of beauty. It is time for Unitarian Universalism to confront the fact that humanism is a moral and religious dead-end. It is time to rediscover instead the intellectual and theological roots of Unitarianism. For it is there, not the arid wasteland of humanism, that truth, insight and spiritual sustenance can be found. It is in a more traditional Unitarian understanding of our place in the Universe that we can find our humanity, not in so-called humanism. Only a God-centered Unitarianism allows us to find a fully modern religious understanding of mankind that retains our humanity.

EIGHTH: Religious Humanism considers the complete realization of human personality to be the end of man's life and seeks its development and fulfillment in the here and now. Perhaps culture corrupts the church; but the church clearly fails to take a firm stand based on its convictions. Fourteenth century Europe found itself undergoing tremendous cultural change. We call this cultural shift The Renaissance . It affected all Europe and thus most of the western world. I. Definitions When does the Renaissance begin? Carl Meyer dates it from mid-fourteenth century through the mid-1500s. Jacob Burckhardt, a nineteenth century historian, dates it about the same. Roland Bainton argues the period covers 1300 to 1600. Some church historians date its beginning with Nicholas V in 1450. Norman Cantor presents the Renaissance as part of the Medieval period. What do we mean by the term Renaissance ? Carl Meyer defines it as a term referring to humanistic studies and artistic accomplishments. Jacob Burckhardt says it was the discovery of man and the world. The term Renaissance describes an attitude toward life which values earth more than heaven, the immortality of fame over immortality of the soul, the striving for success more than striving for justice, the individual over authoritarian institutions, and humanism over Christianity.

Offering comforting and simplistic solutions to the existential problems of life and death, revealed religion and mysticism demonstrated a greater capacity to stir human hearts than reason did. Classical Humanism (Hellenism) had invented the tools of rational thought, science, and democracy, but the power of mythical (Eastern) religion was never entirely subdued. By the Late Roman Empire, science and philosophy were unable to compete with mysticism and myth. Unfortunately for the Church Fathers, the Bible did not say what they wanted to hear when read as written (Jesus was too Jewish). Concepts that contradict reason, such as Original Sin and the Trinity, do not even exist in the Bible and were never mentioned by Jesus. Many believed (and still do) that revelation must overrule reason. But by rejecting all humanism and reason, they rejected not only all learning, science, and freedom, but Jesus message of love, as well as his humanity. The end result was the Dark Ages. The West today seems to be going through a similar cycle. New Age religion, the occult, and other pseudo-religious systems, along with the usual Eastern religions, have gained ground, while Christian conservatives and Secular Humanists battle it out for control. The delicate balance of classical humanism (also known as Hellenism) and Judeo-Christian thought, the basis of civilized society in the West, is under assault. Christianity and Classical Humanism must balance or we are threatened by the very irrational forces that plunged the West into the Dark Ages.
