Krishna-liike, virallisesti ISKCON (International Society for Krisna Conciousness) perustettiin New Yorkissa vuonna 1966. Liikkeen perusti intialaissyntyinen “His Divine Grace”, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, joka saaapui Yhdysvaltoihin täyttämään gurulleen antaman lupauksen levittää hindulaisia oppeja länteen. Lahko, johon Prabhupada kuului, edusti bhakti-hurskautta ja kuului Vishnun palvojien, eli vaishnavien joukkoon. (Heino 1985, s. 215) Prabhupada oli aivan tavallinen ihminen, Abhay Charan De, jolla oli takanaan perhe-elämää ja epäonnistuneita liikeyrityksiä. Viisikymppisenä hän hyläsi perheensä ja omistautui täysin uskonnolleen. Hän perusti lehden, Back to Godhead, jota hän painatti ja levitti itse ja eli köyhänä miehenä milloin missäkin. Länteen tullessan hän oli jo 69-vuotias. Hän saapui New Yorkiin mukanaan päällään olevat vaatteet, kirjoituskone, kattila ja seitsemän dollaria. Lännessä Prabhupada löysi viimein seuraajansa: ensimmäiset Krishna-liikkeen jäsenet olivat lähinnä hippejä ja narkomaaneja, nuoria hyvinvointiyhteisuntaan pettyneitä.
