Their deities acquired a theology, a gospel, a general myth and a theoretical justification. Such religions produced a propaganda and missionaries. Eventually there were shrines to Persian and Palestinian and Egyptian saviors on the borders of Scotland; religious sculptors and painters who had learned from Praxiteles and Apelles worked in the Gobi Desert and among the recently civilized Japanese. Of course, magical elements of this sort lie at the very sources of all the religions of the ancient world and reach their greatest development in Babylon and Egypt. Maturing civilization gives the magical formulas of the Book of the Dead a personal and ethical interpretation. But the individual crises of the soul which accompany the dislocations, deracinations, and insecurities of men living in world empires reinstate the securities of the primitive spell, the formula, the coercive rite, the knowledge of presumed absolute fact that ensures salvation. it is in code Gnosticism as such is only a few years older than Christianity but its origins, or at least the origins of its material, are lost in time. Some of this material it shares with Christianity, but Gnosticism is much more conservative, it uses far more of the past. Many conceptions about Jesus now current and credible in New Age circles are rooted in a movement of spiritual protest which, until recently, was the concern only of the specialized scholar or the occultist. This ancient movement Gnosticism provides much of the form and color for the New Age portrait of Jesus as the illumined Illuminator: one who serves as a cosmic catalyst for others' awakening. Many essentially Gnostic notions received wide attention through the sagacious persona of the recently deceased Joseph Campbell in the television series and best-selling book, The Power of Myth. For example, in discussing the idea that "God was in Christ," Campbell affirmed that "the basic Gnostic and Buddhist idea is that that is true of you and me as well." Jesus is an enlightened example who "realized in himself that he and what he called the Father were one, and he lived out of that knowledge of the Christhood of his nature." According to Campbell, anyone can likewise live out his or her Christ nature.

The designation Gnosticism, derived from the Greek gnostikos (one who has gnosis, or "secret knowledge"), is a term of modern scholarship. Evidence for the Gnostic phenomenon, found in the Church Fathers who opposed Gnostic teachings (Irenaeus, c. 185; Hippolytus, c. 230; Epiphanius, c. 375) and in the Gnostic writings themselves, reveals a diversity in theology, ethics, and ritual that defies strict classification. Yet Gnostic sects appear to have shared an emphasis on the redemptive power of esoteric knowledge, acquired not by learning or empirical observation but by divine revelation. History The origins of the Gnostic world view have been sought by scholars in the dualism of Iranian religion, the allegorical Idealism of the Middle Platonic philosophers, and the apocalypticism of certain Jewish mystics. Extractions: Continuing his work in How to Read Superhero Comics and Why Geoff Klock, in X-Men, Emerson, Gnosticism, argues that two writers of the superhero comic book the X-Men suggest a whole new definition of the Post-Human, an alternative to what Hayles, Haraway, and Moravec have to offer. He begins by connecting a moment in Mark Millars Ultimate X-Men with a passage in Ralph Waldo Emerson: an ancient heretical second-century sect of Christianity called Gnosticism is the common factor. Klock argues that Millars X-Men incorporates Gnosticisms radical notion of subjectivity into its Post-Human narrative, but not without cost: Millars depiction of team leader Professor X shows the ways in which Post-Humanism, particularly in the realm of ethics, easily veers into the inhuman. This pessimistic Post-Humanism, which is held out above every alternative, is reflected in the serial nature of the superhero comic book series itself, in which decades pass without the books heroes being able to significantly effect their world for the better. The reason for this is that there are very few exhibits of first hand copies of their writings. These writings were burned by the orthodox Christians from the first century onward. Gnosticism was considered heretical and Gnostics heretics. So, until the find of Nag Hammadi in 1945 little was known of Gnosticism and the Gnostics except from the writings of their adversaries. One of the main things which separated the Gnostics from orthodox Christians was the mysticism of their beliefs. It began with their views of God and creation. They viewed the One which they called the true God as having a feminine part which was the Spirit. In accord, they also held that Jesus came from God and the Spirit to form the Trinity. Also, the Gnostic differed with the orthodox Christians on two other major issues: the salvation of man and the person of Jesus. They disagreed with the theory that man was sinful by nature, but believed man erred through ignorance; by knowledge man could correct his ways and gain salvation. The special knowledge which the Gnostics subscribed to was known as "gnois." Gnois was not a logical type of knowledge as one might gain in the study of mathematics or chemistry, but it was an intuitive or reflexive type of knowledge which comes from the study of man's inner self or soul. Any other knowledge did not concern the Gnostics. They called this gnois illuminated Logos because they believed it led to man's salvation.

Some of these include Basilides, Valentinus, Marcion, Ptolemaeus, Cerinthus, Menander, Simon Magus, and Saturninus (Grant: 30-43). What is Gnosticism: As noted, Gnosticism has been defined as a mystical religion (Ellwood and Partin: 96). It is a mixing of rites and myths from a variety of religious traditions, combining Occultism, Oriental Mysticism, astrology, magic, elements from Jewish tradition, Christian views of redemption, and even aspects of Plato's doctrine that man is not at home in the bodily realm (McManners: 26). Despite the fact that many Gnostic systems vary, they all have in common "a world view shaped by Hellenism and Neoplatism" and "esoteric Judaism, Zoroastrianism, and the ancient heritages of Egypt and Mesopotamia."(Ellwood and Partin: 92) One can directly trace some of the individual aspects of Gnosticism to their roots. Their beliefs in the resurrection of the dead and dualism come from Iranian-Zoroastrian religious ideas (Rudolph: 282). Their communities are organized like the Hellenistic Mystery religions (Rudolph: 285). Orphism and Greek background influenced the Gnostic belief that the soul suffers in this world and it is fate that man should have to endure it. In turn, living a righteous life leads to salvation (Rudolph: 286).

Defining "Gnosticism" At present, there is a heated discussion among scholars as to how the term "Gnosticism" should be defined or whether it is precise and useful enough to be used at all. Those who want to abandon it altogether think that the connotations of "Gnosticism" are so generalized as to be more misleading than helpful when individual texts and phenomena, traditionally called gnostic, are studied. Other scholars insist that even if the term "Gnosticism" is not abandoned, the historian should recognize the ideological and apologetic ways in which the term has been used in the ancient and modern discourses of orthodoxy and heresy. In the present website the terms "Gnosticism" and "gnostic" characterize those religious doctrines and myths of late antiquity that maintain or presuppose that the cosmos is a result of the activity of an evil or ignorant creator and that salvation is a process in the course of which a human being receives the knowledge of his/her divine origin and returns to the realm of light after having been freed from the limitations of the world and the body. In gnostic Christianity knowledge is not necessarily seen as a reference to the intellect but has a religious significance. The object of knowledge is the divine origin of humanity, which the individual can be reminded of and to which he/she is urged to return. The question is really one of a saving knowledge. In gnostic Christianity knowledge is not necessarily seen as a competitor with faith, but as complementing and deepening faith. One gnostic Christian defined saving knowledge thus:

Mysticism, Gnosticism and the Jewish Kabbalah are all very similar. Their path to God is to look for God within ourselves. If we take the view that God is within everything, that nature and the universe is the very embodiment of God, then our own inner Self is the most accessible point for experiencing an all-pervading Supreme Reality. This Gnostic view is powerfully presented by Jesus in Luke 17:20-21: And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! , lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you . Luke 17:20-21, KJV The word within as it appears in the King James Bible has been translated in some modern bibles as among. These interpreters believe Jesus intended to say he himself was among them. However, this does not tally with preceding statements in the passage. Jesus says the kingdom of God cannot be observed. Therefore, Jesus could not have been talking about himself. He was observable. Jesus says the kingdom of God is not a place. It is neither here nor there. Thus Jesus could not have been referring to himself. We must take all physical descriptions of the kingdom, such as streets paved with gold and pearly gates, as metaphors because these things can be observed.
