St John's Methodist Church Hayfield. A historic church in the Peak District National Park of Derbyshire. A Grade 2 listed building of interest to both the general historian and specialist in Wesleyan studies. Activities, church directory, history, location, redevelopment and links. Part of the New Mills circuit http://www.stjohnshayfield.org.uk
Extractions: smithcol@supanet.com Our church is a small village chapel situated on the edge of the Peak District National Park, and easily accessible from both Manchester and Sheffield. The building is of considerable historic interest both to the general social historian, and to specialist students of Methodism and of the life of John Wesley. We have a small, but regular and caring congregation, meeting every Sunday at 10.45am, together with a Sunday school and occasional youth activities. Opened in 1782, St. Johns is the only non-conformist chapel in Hayfield, and is one of the oldest Methodist churches in the world. Research at the time of our bicentenary celebrations established it as the 13th oldest in the UK, and John Wesley himself in all probability opened it. For its historical interest and simple beauty, the chapel is a Grade 2 listed building. We particularly welcome new people to our fellowship, irrespective of their stage on life's journey, and see ourselves as a learning community seeking to build each other up.
