    Extractions: American Foursquare When the pilgrims first sailed into what is now Plymouth Massachusetts, in the winter or 1620, they faced a hostile, rugged wilderness and bitterly cold climate. Although over half of then died that first winter, the settlement at Plymouth took hold. By 1643 20,000 settlers had arrived from England. The prospect of land to farm and timber to build a home was a great incentive even for those who were not escaping religious persecution. The Pilgrims brought the memory of the basic 17th century dwellings, based on the medieval technique of post and beam construction with them. The first homes were simple timber structures with thatched roofs and white limestone walls. They soon learned that the harsh New England winters required adaptions to the traditional style. They protected the exterior with horizontal, hand cut clapboards and roof thatch with wood shingles to withstand the biting northeast winds. There are still examples of this early Colonial style existing today, the most famous, Turner-Ingersall House (House of the Seven Gables) in Salem, MA

    Extractions: - Jack Hayford (born 1934) is the hyper- charismatic pastor of The Church on the Way, The First Foursquare Church of Van Nuys, California. Hayford started the church in 1969 with 18 people; it is now the largest Foursquare Church (Pentecostal) in the U.S. about 9,000 members (of which about 80% speak in tongues as a prayer language , according to Hayford) with weekly attendance between 8,500 and 10,000. Hayford promotes the "four-square" doctrines of Pentecostalism that Jesus is Savior, Baptizer with the Holy Spirit, Healer, and Coming King. He also teaches the false doctrine that healing is promised in the atonement ( Charisma , June 1992). An effervescent young woman was escorted from the darkness of a clear California evening into the studio at the Oakland Rockridge radio station. Once inside the building, she found herself in a strange world filled with glowing vacuum tubes and humming electrical transformers, interconnected by miles of wires. She surveyed her eerie surroundings. Beyond the riser on which she stood sat a small studio audience. In the back of the room a newspaper cameraman sent to cover this important event paced the floor. At her side sat the requisite radio engineer, his eyes riveted on the large clock on the wall. Meanwhile, in the comfort of their homes, thousands of listeners anxiously awaited the start of the female speaker's message. Entire families gathered in their parlors. Some fiddled with the knobs on their console-sized radios, hoping to find a quiet spot among the crackles, pops and the squeals so prevalent in those early days of radio. Finally, the second hand stood straight up, and the radio operator pointed to the woman, the signal indicating the start of the program. She stepped up to the large black horn attached to the microphone, cleared her throat, and began to speak forcefully. At that moment Aimee Semple McPherson became the first woman in history to preach a sermon over the "wireless telephone."
