In the middle ages it was the site of a Benedictine abbey and over the centuries has attracted many thousands of people on their own pilgrim journeys. The Iona Community, founded in 1938 by the Rev George MacLeod, then a parish minister in Glasgow is an ecumenical Christian community that is committed to seeking new ways of living the Gospel in today's world. Initially this purpose was expressed through the rebuilding of the monastic quarters of the mediaeval abbey on Iona and pursued in mission and ministry throughout Scotland and beyond. The Community today remains committed to: rebuilding the common life, through working for social and political change, striving for the renewal of the church with an ecumenical emphasis, and exploring new more inclusive approaches to worship, all based on an integrated understanding of spirituality."

Among the Baptists, for example, those with the FEBC consider themselves more conservative than do those associated with CBM. On Scripture, the FEBC would be more allied with the inerrancy view (verbal inspiration, word by word) and CBM churches with the infallibility view (in essence the Word of God). The former group does not ordain women as elders or senior pastors; the latter does. With few exceptions, both require members to be baptized on profession of faith as youths or adults. Chinese congregations are generally conservative and moderately Calvinistic, said John Kao, general director of the Association of Chinese Evangelical Churches.

That means that they are not part of the Anglican Communion. To be part of it, a church must have a formal relation with the See of Canterbury. It is entirely possible for a church to be in full communion with the Anglican Church without being in the Anglican Communion. It is also entirely possible for a church to be completely Anglican in heritage and origin, but for it not to be in communion with the See of Canterbury. Many of the churches listed below refer to themselves as 'continuing churches'. By this they mean that they are continuing with some characteristic or characteristics that some Canterbury-communion churches have chosen not to continue. You will often see the term 'the continuum' to refer to the collection of churches that have broken away from Canterbury in order to do what they see as continue the old traditions. In order to have an Anglican church in valid apostolic succession, one needs to have one bishop whose consecration is through an Anglican origin. While that bishop may have been consecrated in the Anglican church, he or she has no obligation to remain administratively part of it. Each of these churches listed on this page has at least one independent bishop, and has a compelling reason for not being part of the Canterbury communion.

Extractions: Denise Gillard In his book, Reconstructing The Black Image, Gordon de la Mothe states, "Religion plays a large part in the life of Black people all over the world." As we begin our discussion, a few words of clarification are needed. First, this paper is a very preliminary survey of the evolution of the Black Church in Canada. Unlike the authors of We're Rooted Here and They Can't Pull us Up: Essays in African Canadian History, I don't feel as if I have even scratched the surface. Primary source material is not easily accessed and the struggle to produce and catalogue secondary material is itself a new and challenging venture of Black Canadian scholars. Most notably, there are fundamental differences between the writing and study of Black History in Canada and the United States, respectively. While the United States has long acknowledged Black history as a legitimate field of historical inquiry, the Black historical presence in Canada on several levels has yet to be acknowledged. The ramifications of this lack for the student of church history is at times overwhelming.

Extractions: By the providence of God, the Free Church of Scotland, as the predominant form of Presbyterian Christianity in mid-nineteenth century Canada, had a profound impact on Toronto and what became Ontario. But in 1875 the four branches of Presbyterianism in Canada joined together. Thereafter, although the Free Church heritage continued to manifest itself, the Free Church as a distinct body ceased in Canada. Mr. MacKenzie served diligently through the 1920s and well into the 1930s. From time to time, ministers and students of the Free Church came to Toronto (as well as to nascent congregations in Fort William (now Thunder Bay), Vancouver and Detroit), at the invitation of our grateful predecessors in this place, to conduct services and otherwise provide encouragement. Throughout this period, the Colonial Committee of the Free Church kept a watchful and sympathetic eye and assisted as it was able. The seriousness with which these men and women took their responsibilities directed by passages like Deut. 12:32 and chapter 21.1 of the Westminster Confession is clearly shown by the terms of the trust under which the trustees took the property (and under which our trustees today continue to hold our property). For example, the sixth condition of the trust is:
