A week later Patsy went back and the baby was doing so much better. The mother said right away, "God answered your prayer!" Two teams, having recently returned from one of the most devastated regions in the Tsunami hit area, report a sense of hope emerging as buildings and boats are being reconstructed, fish ponds, shrimp ponds and salt flats renewed, and lives are slowly returning to normal. There is certainly much yet that needs to be done to recover from the devastation, but as ministry partners serve in each village and town, relationships are being built, barriers of fear and mistrust are being removed and friendships are being formed that will hopefully one day lead to spiritual freedom and new lives. To this end, the EFCA is assisting through its partnerships in each of the regions. As we enable and encourage national workers, we give them continued resolve to pour out their live in service to people who, at one time, considered them enemies. Our continued financial assistance and sending of teams to the region at regular intervals, will ensure that the roots of Love will go deeply into the soil of the hearts of the people.

Both groups had been birthed in the revival movements of the late nineteenth century. The Swedish group had its formal beginnings in Boone, Iowa, at a conference held in October of 1884. In that same year, two Norwegian-Danish groups began to worship and fellowship together in Boston, Massachusetts and Tacoma, Washington. By 1912, both the Swedish Evangelical Free Church and the Norwegian-Danish Evangelical Free Church Association had been formed. Those two associations, representing 275 local congregations, were formally joined together as they gathered for a merger conference in June of 1950 at the Medicine Lake Conference Grounds near Minneapolis, Minnesota. The international and national offices of the EFCA have been located in Minneapolis since the merger took place. Dr. E.A. Halleen, who had served for 28 years as the president of the Swedish association, was elected as the first president of the newly formed Evangelical Free Church of America. His one-year term crowned a brilliant ministry career as a pastor, teacher, evangelist and church leader.
