Extractions: Although "congregational rule" may seem to suggest that pure democracy reigns in Congregational churches, this is usually not really the case. It is granted, with rare exception, that God has given the government of the Church into the hands of an ordained ministry. What makes Congregationalism unique is its system of checks and balances, which constrains the authority of the minister, the lay officers, and the members. Most importantly, the boundaries of the powers of the ministers and church officers are set by clear and constant reminders of the freedoms guaranteed by the Gospel to the laity, and to every person. With that freedom, as the shepherd in a Congregationalist church is quite likely to frequently remind his flock, comes the responsibility upon each member to govern himself under Christ. The theory of Congregationalism designs its own failure upon lay members who will not meditate on the sermons and apply their lessons in their lives, who will not study the Bible, who will not charitably and patiently debate issues with one another, or vote with the glory and service of God as the foremost consideration in all of their decisions. Congregationalism provides no safety net for an ungodly people, and therefore envisions ideally that none but truly converted Christians will be members of the church.

The main roof is divided transversely into three spans, and supported on cast-iron columns with ornamental capitals, picked out with gold on a maroon ground. Longitudinally there are three arches over the columns on each side, and one wider arch over each transept. The timbers are wrought and stained, with carved brackets and moulded ribs. Galleries extend round the sides of the chapel, the gallery fronts being of ornamental iron panels, painted in gold and backed with crimson. There is an organ-gallery in the apse, and the organ-pew is slightly elevated. The architect was Mr. Frederick Barnes, of Ipswich; and the builders Messrs. Sudbury and Son, of Halstead who took the contract for £3000, with the materials of the old chapel on the same site.

These pictures are the most praiseworthy feature of the volume, although they vary considerably. The author was not at his best when he wrote these stories. They are funny, and now and then very funny. But a coarse streak comes to the surface every little while and is disagreeable. The book is handsomely gotten up by the publishers and does them credit, but we cannot commend the stories which compose it to our readers very heartily.

Extractions: The country child, probably, whether boy or girlthe country boy certainlyhas watched the methods of that singular insect he knows as tumblebug, and wondered at one moment how it knows so much, at another how it knows so little. In the one case, with infinite care and patience its eggs are inclosed in the little ball of dung which insures to them an even temperature and safe hatching, and this it rolls over and around all obstacles till a place of safe deposit is attained; in the other, any small, round object arouses equal but aimless zeal, and the tumblebug, compelled it would seem by irresistible impulse, spends its energy on a bit of wood or stone. This is fatuity, entertaining to the student of bug nature, who, if philosophical in his tendencies, naturally carries out the analogy into human life. Like the tumblebug, a multitude of human beings are engaged in rolling any round and rollable thing that comes in their way, and herin lies the reason of the enormous per cent of business failures recorded yearly in Bradstreet, and the larger mass of unrecorded failures in friendship, in love, in marriagein short, in all ill-considered, hastily-formed human ties and relations. This is the tragic side, yet with a gleam of comedy in its perverse manifestations, over which, we may be sure, the highter powers smile with much the same sense of gentle wonder and curiosity as fills the watching child. The tumblebug habit, however, does not confine itself to human relations. It enters no less into occupations and general interests, even into what we call cultivating our minds. And at this point, from the list of typical cases life affords, we have one, fatuous to an unbelievable degree, yet going on calmly and labeled "progress" by every one involved.

We are the successors to the Pilgrims and the Puritans, and we are the denomination that has most embodied the religious ethos of the United States of America. I was importuned to participate in this latest pilgrimage to Israel (December 16-23) because of my knowledge of and love for Judaism and the Jewish people, as well as my long history in ecumenical work. Coming to know this movement and its people in the 1980s, I was impressed by their commitment to Christian ideals, their decency and kindliness, as well as what I viewed as their complete lack of any kind of racism. As a result, Unificationism has become much more than another denomination. It is, in some respects, a form of "meta-Christianity," even a form of "meta-religion" because of the scope and inclusiveness of its activities. The IIPC (International Interreligious Peace Council) is now instrumental in pushing for recognition as a worldwide religious leadership organization to be berthed at the United Nations. I hope and pray that people of the world-standing of the Right Rev. Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama will soon be part of this movement; bringing their influence as well as their own unique perspectives on religious freedom and co-prosperity to bear on the United Nations and all humanity.
