Most are not related to the events that took place in Schwarzenau (present day Germany), in 1708, and to the group called "the Schwarzenau Brethren." According to The Brethren Encyclopedia, there have been more than 35 groups which are identified as having evolved from the Schwarzenau Brethren. It is important to note that those that are listed below, all consider themselves to be the true heirs of the Schwarzenau Brethren. The Church of the Brethren (earlier called Fraternity of German Baptists, until 1907 they were known as the German Baptist Brethren). Membership about 155,000. Beginning in Pennsylvania in 1723. Considered "conservative" in the 1880s. It has a seminary and six colleges. Headquarters - Elgin, Illinois. Ephrata Community (German Seventh Day Baptists). Led by Conrad Beissel, it resulted in the first schism among the Brethren in 1728. In 1732, Beissel led his followers to the place where the Ephrata Cloister now stands. Membership about 100. The founders, largely of Anabaptist background (probably mainly Mennonite), were deeply influenced by the pietistic revival movements of the period which emphasized a crisis conversion experience, with an attendant belief in a personal, "heartfelt" relationship to God. Some of the founders received a conversion experience in the revivals, while others came to believe in what the revivals emphasized. They began to meet in their homes to discuss their experiences and to study the Bible for new insights it might give them. Their discussion led eventually to their formal organization as a separate group. As Anabaptists they were firm in their views of discipleship and of the church as the visible, called-out body of believers. But they were also convinced of the need for the crisis conversion experience. Thus they did not feel comfortable with the Anabaptist groups from which they came or with various other pietistic groups in the area. As a result, they organized themselves into a new group where the principles of baptism and pietism were combined.

Extractions: This page is still under construction The Brethren Church began in Schwarzenau, Germany in 1708 primarily out of a desire for religious freedom and in reaction to the government controlled churches of the day. By the mid 1700's the Brethren Church had migrated to America in pursuit of that same religious freedom. The heritage of the Brethren church would be similar to that of other "Anabaptist" denominations such as the Mennonite, German Baptist Brethren, Church of the Brethren and Grace Brethren. The Brethren maintain that the entire Bible (Old Testament and New Testament) is the inspired Word of God and that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who gave His life as a sacrifice for our sins. We also believe that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day and that He has ascended into heaven where He intercedes on our behalf. Having ascended into heaven, Jesus sent His Holy Spirit to live in the hearts of His people as our comforter, counselor and friend. We believe that those who have acknowledged Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior will have the assurance of a home in heaven with Christ for all eternity. The Brethren Church seeks to live out their faith in Christ on a daily basis. Obedience to Christ is demonstrated through a commitment to a daily relationship with God and involvement in the ministries of the church. We believe that God empowers His people to this obedient service through the gifts of His Holy Spirit. Each person who believes in Christ is equipped by God to perform some meaningful function within the context of the Body of Christ.
