Contrary to a popular assumption it is not an import, but as native as tartan. With the rest of the Scottish Church it shares the heritage of Ninian, Columba and the Celtic Church, and that church's later translation to an Episcopal, Roman model. Scotland's Reformation was as confused, messy and complex as that of any nation. It was born during forty years of struggling regency. Protracted arm-wrestling between Kirk and Crown on the issues of Presbytery-versus-Bishop and Church-versus-State turned the visionary, Presbyterian Church of the Scottish Reformation by the time of the Civil Wars into an intolerant one. The time was not ripe for a Scottish Congregationalism. Cromwell's New Model Army did attempt to hard-sell Congregationalism to Scotland, during its eight-year occupation, but these efforts barely survived the Restoration. In the 18th Century voices dissenting from the Kirk could be heard in Scotland. The Glasites, the Old Scots Independents and the Berians, three indigenous forms of Congregationalism, came and went as movements concerned to synthesise the primitive New Testament Church. Their example however was still in currency when a more dynamic movement began.

In the case of Church Records this applies to records of Church of Scotland congregations within particular Presbyteries, especially in the larger conurbations such as Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee. Where a record is held in a local archive, this will be stated in the NAS electronic catalogue. Depositing Church of Scotland Records in The National Archives of Scotland The National Archives of Scotland has an agreement with the Church of Scotland for the deposit of Church records that are more than 50 years old and not still in use. Such records should be delivered to the office of the Principal Clerk of the General Assembly for onward transmission to The National Archives of Scotland or, by arrangement with the NAS Church Records Officer, directly to The National Archives of Scotland. Guidance on the deposit of Church records is available from the NAS Church Records Officer.

Next THE FREE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND In Glen Urquhart most of the community supported the Disruption and erected the church and the manse in 1847. In 1900 the minister and most of the congregation joined the Union. However, all the elders and many of the congregation had returned to the Free Church by 1903. The church was destroyed by fire in 1956 and rebuilt shortly after on a much smaller scale. Glen Urquhart: Church located at Oakbank, Milton, 1 mile west of Drumnadrochit on A831 Cannich Road. This church was built in 1844 by the people of the Glen. The story behind the building of the church is common to many Highland communities of the time, when the "Disruption" took place. It was a most heart-warming story. Briefly at the centre of the story is a spiritual movement that was taking place throughout Scotland. This movement meant that people became very aware that the men in the pulpit and ruling over them in spiritual matters (their ministers) ought to be men who believed in, and preached from, the Bible. However the predominant church in Scotland was the Church of Scotland, and in many places the men who occupied the pulpit were not at all interested in the specifics of Bible teaching. Indeed their life styles were far from commending Bible teaching.

We are finding the Karen to be wonderful neighbors and hosts. Despite all the challenges the people face they are warm and outgoing. Always seeing the positive and always hoping for the best. The Karen people and the Church which is called to serve them are under constant political and cultural pressure. Have a look at some of the linked websites to the left to findout some of the horrific details of the oppression faced by the Karen living in Burma. Recent evictions of this indigeneous people from forest homelands and the fact that many are seen as 2nd or 3rd rate citizens (eg. given only hilltribe status and restricted as to rights of movement) highlights the difficult situation they face in Thailand as well. Klity, where one of the Presbytery's new believers' groups is located has suffered from the exploitative practice of a lead mine.

The new church included more than one third of all former Church of Scotland ministers. Guided by Thomas Chalmers as their first moderator, within two years the Free Church had built 500 new churches, as well as 712 schools by 1851.
