There is a strong tradition in south India that St. Thomas the Apostle introduced Christianity in India in 52 AD. St. Thomas Christians there are a living proof of it. Yet, many a Muslim and Hindu in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh wrongly consider Christianity a recent phenomenon and a foreign one at that. The Advent of the Portuguese and Christianity in Bengal: Renowned Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama rounded the Cape of Good Hope of South Africa in 1498 and landed at Calicut (present Kozikode of India) by discovering the sea-route to India. From 1500 onwards, the Portuguese established their power first in Cranganore, then to Cochin and Goa. With these traders and commercial opportunists, also came Franciscan, Dominican, Augustinian, and Jesuit missionaries to bring Indian heathens to Christ. From 1517 onwards, Portuguese traders from Goa were traversing the sea-route to Bengal but were not successful in establishing trading posts in this part of India. Only in 1537, were they allowed to settle and open customs houses at Satgaon (near present-day Hooghly) of West Bengal (India) and Chittagong of present-day Bangladesh. In 1577, Mughal emperor Akbar permitted the Portuguese to build permanent settlements and churches in Bengal.

The Reformation, widely conceived, was a reaction against the hierarchical and legalistic structures of the Papacy and the Roman Catholic Church. Reformers rallied against the Roman Catholic Church's dogmatic theology, economic and religious exploitation of the common masses, and colonialization and conquest of indigenous peoples. Most fundamentally, the Reformation challenged the Papacy's claims of divine authorization and infallibility. One particularly well-known Catholic method of exploitation in the Middle Ages was the practice of selling indulgences, a monetary payment of penalty which, supposedly, absolved one of past sins and/or released one from purgatory after death. It was the selling of indulgences that led the Reformer Martin Luther to post his famous 95 Theses - a document challenging Roman Catholic authority in theological matters, including indulgences and many others. Luther's opposition to the selling of indulgences was not new, however. In most of the Reformation movements stress lay not upon new understandings or doctrines, but on a return to the more authentic and original excellence of tradition. Luther, one of the main Protestant Reformers, eventually arrived at the conclusion that divine relationship and salvation come by grace through faith, not by good works, belief in dogma, or economic propitiation. One's relationship to the divine is initiated by God, and one can only participate in this relationship by remaining open to it. Therefore, Luther's theology placed him in square opposition to the Roman Catholic practice of selling indulgences.

Our name, Eutopia , is a play on words devised by our founding Editor, Richard L. Kent. The word "Utopia," as you know, is derived from the Greek meaning "no place" and is the title of St. Thomas More's satirical political work. Like the fictitious country in More's novel, Utopia refers to a "place of fantasy," an earthly paradise, a perfect world brought about by the power of human beings, something most people know to be a pipe dream. Striving for this illusory and rationalistic Utopia is a recurring pretension of secular liberalism, both of More's day and our own. Eu-topia , on the other hand, derives from the Greek meaning "good place." The purpose of our magazine is to do our part to improve life here; remembering however, that our ultimate goal, with the help of God's grace, is not to bring about an earthly paradise, but to achieve the Place of Goodness at the end of our lives, when at last we achieve the gates of heaven.
