Extractions: Mission Statement: "God calls the Wakemans Grove Church of the Brethren to share salvation and make Christian disciples of all persons in the surrounding community and throughout the world by providing a strong and nurturing fellowship. Inspired by God's Word, revealed in Christ's example, and guided by the Holy Spirit, the church shall minister to the people's spiritual, social, and physical needs through caring and service." MESSAGE FROM PASTOR CHIP Little did I know that when I was at Wakemans Grove for revivals in 1997 that I would be back March 5, 2001 as their pastor. To be here feels real good and my wife (Rachel) and I believe we are where God wants us to be at this time in our walk with Him. I came with the idea of "Lord, what can I do for these people? What is it You want to do in their lives through me as their pastor?" Praise God! There were things He wanted to do in my life through them. The love they have for each other and the Lord is contagious and life changing. Their excitement is motivating and their desire to experience Christ in a more intimate relationship is challenging.

Church Of The Brethren - Dunkards Somerset County, Pennsylvania genealogy, family trees, family roots, history, historic places, local information, county resources. http://www.rootsweb.com/~pasomers/dunk.htm
Extractions: Townships There were several Old Order Brethren congregations in Somerset County. Many people incorrectly refer to this sect of the Anabaptists as "DUNKARD". This term was applied to the members of the Church of the Brethren in the late 19th century and early 20th. The word "Dunker" was acutally a anglicized corruption of the German word, "Tunker," which means "dipper" or immerserer referring to the mode of baptism practiced by this group. The term is still used today by two minor conservative orders, Old Order Dunkards and the Dunkard Brethren. The mode of baptism practiced by this group was adopted during this groups founding in Pennsylvania in the 1770's. In Brothers Valley Township It is believed that the first religious group to arrive in Somerset County were the German Baptists or "Die Bruder's Leute". They are the one's who named "Brueder Thal" or Brothers Valley and were said to have been organized in the county as early as 1763. In Stony Creek Township The Stony Creek congregation called, Glade Church, first records its founding in 1763 under the supervision of George William MARTIN. In 1770, a list of 17 members is recorded by the Rev. Martin and his wife.

Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Contact The ministry of Bible Helps began in 1950, when a group of concerned members of the Church of the Brethren, including G. Howard Danner, Samuel M. Lehigh, David W. Lehigh, and Amos Lehigh decided to make available a Bible-teaching, Gospel message from a conservative viewpoint, in printed form. The first publication consisted of several articles written by various contributors, and ensuing issues were sent out once a month. In 1950, about 1,000 pieces were printed, and the distribution was limited to a few states. This later evolved into a publication with one featured article in each issue, written by one writer, and was sent out every other month. Brother Harold S. Martin became involved, and did a large majority of the writing for Bible Helps. The growth of Bible Helps was largely effected by "word-of-mouth" advertising.
