Extractions: For several years past certain members of our churches have expressed disquiet concerning the relationship between Freemasonry and Christianity and the possible influence of the movement within some churches. The matter has been raised on several occasions in recent Assemblies and has been the subject of correspondence in the Scottish Baptist Magazine. Although we have little direct evidence that this constitutes as serious and widespread problem in Scottish Baptist Churches, the Council considered the matter carefully and originally agreed that the Doctrine and Inter-Church Relations core groups should review available literature and compile a document directing churches to sources of information, where it was felt guidance was needed. However, there were those who felt sufficiently strongly about the question to continue to press the Council for firmer action, and at the Council meeting of January 1987 it was agreed to appoint a group to study the relationship between Freemasonry and Christianity and to publish their findings in the form of a Viewpoint booklet. They do this in the conviction that our people need clear guidance in this area.

Course Directors: Dr Nigel Wright and Roy Boyer C.Phys, MinstP, M.Ed. The Baptist Training Partnership is a consortium of Association and College initiatives sponsored by the Baptist Union of Great Britain and set up to offer training for members of local churches. As part of its contribution to the Partnership, Spurgeon's College has designed a course aimed primarily at equipping church members to preach and to pastor in local churches. The course follows a curriculum jointly agreed by all the Baptist Colleges and the Baptist Union. It is therefore acceptable to the Union, when also subject to satisfactory Association ministerial recognition outcomes, as a track of training for those seeking Union recognition as preachers or lay-pastors. Equipped to Minister is offered in the first instance to the churches of the Eastern Baptist Association, the London Baptist Association and the South East Baptist Partnership and takes place at Spurgeon's College on selected Saturdays throughout the year. Tutors are staff or associate staff of Spurgeon's College. Equipped to Minister works on the following basis: There are 10 modules, 8 of which are required by the BU for preachers and 9 for lay pastors.

Please know that we are holding the people of London and all of the UK in our thoughts and prayers. We pray that God will give you comfort, strength, integrity and perseverance. We are aware that an Islamist website claims that al-Qaeda is responsible for the attacks. We agree with Prime Minister Tony Blair's statement that the vast and overwhelming majority of Muslims in Britain and elsewhere are decent and law-abiding people who abhor such acts of violence. We know that the Muslim Council of Britain and other British Islamic groups have condemned the attacks and urged Muslims to help in the recovery effort. You will also want to know that the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) based in Washington, D.C. has called the violence "barbaric crimes that can never be justified or excused." CAIR went on to offer their sincere condolences and to call for the swift apprehension and punishment of the perpetrators. We are calling upon our local American Baptist churches to uphold you in prayer and to stand with you in solidarity. May the Spirit of God empower the Baptist Union of Great Britain in giving care, seeking justice, protecting the innocent, and leading others into the fullness of God's love through the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth.
