The bird seeketh its nest; the nightingale the charm of the rose; whilst those birds, the hearts of men, content with transient dust, have strayed far from their eternal nest, and with eyes turned towards the slough of heedlessness are bereft of the glory of the divine presence. Alas! How strange and pitiful; for a mere cupful, they have turned away from the billowing seas of the Most High, and remained far from the most effulgent horizon. Extractions: Baha'i Faith or universalism? The Baha'i Faith began as an offshoot of Babism, which itself was an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam. Babism was a radical millennarian sect that arose in the mid-1800's in Persia, what is now Iran. It was founded by Sayyid Muhammad Ali Shirazi, a merchant and mystic who studied in a religious school devoted to prophecies of the appearance of the Qaim, a messianic figure who was expected by Shi'ite Muslims to appear at the end of the world. In 1844 he decided he was this figure, and began calling himself the Bab ("Gate" in Arabic) who would be the new mediator between God and man and would conquer the world and transform it into a spiritual paradise. Many clerics and revolutionary thinkers in Persia at the time decided to follow the Bab, and initially he encouraged his followers to attempt to overthrow the Persian government through militant means. This approach led only to slaughter of many

Extractions: This work also represents my personal expression of deep thanks to Gandhi, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the culmination of his life of serviceand ultimate sacrificein 1948, when he departed his earthly life with God's mention on his lips. Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869, and I was born during his one hundredth birth anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, my parents named me Gandhimohan, meaning Gandhi-admirer. As a child I was deeply influenced by Gandhi through my parents' adherence to many of his ethical and moral teachings. I have refrained from using the title ``Mahatma'' (great spirit) because I feel that Gandhi may have disliked it were he alive today. His statements regarding his distaste for lofty titles include the following: ``My Mahatmaship is worthless.'' ``I hold it to be a blasphemy to represent me as Shri Krishna.'' ``I have become literally sick of the adoration of the unthinking multitude.'' ``Though a non-co-operator, I shall gladly subscribe to a Bill to make it criminal for anybody to call me Mahatma and to touch my feet. Where I can impose the law myself, i.e., at the Ashram, the practice is criminal.'' ``Truth to me is infinitely dearer than the 'mahatmaship', which is purely a burden.''

Letter To NSA On Gays Group of homosexually oriented members present some recommendations to the NSA. http://www.bahai-library.org/letters/gays.html
Extractions: To The National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is United States Dear Friends, The Baha'is and their friends who gathered in Reno, Nevada from the 3rd to the 5th of September, 1993 want to sincerely thank the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of the United States for supporting this historic gathering. Without your love and support, this weekend could not have occurred. For many of us, it was the first opportunity to speak honestly about the pain, hurt, and confusion we experience because of the lack of tolerance and acceptance of us from our Baha'i brothers and sisters. Our devotions on Sunday morning included the naming of the many people we once knew who had passed on due to suicide or complications from AIDS, and the recitation of the long healing prayer for their souls and the success of this meeting. The lives of so many precious friends so tragically cut short gave a special gravity to our gathering. We all experienced a powerful sense of urgency that some new openness and understanding be reached, not only for our own well being, but for the sake of future generations of gay men and lesbians, and further, for the good of the Faith itself. Many of us have been in hiding from our Baha'i communities, we have all been made to feel unwelcome in our own religion. For a few of us, it seems that alienation, confusion, and despair has been too heavy a burden to bear. We began with prayers for assistance and by affirming that we are all strong in the covenant, and want to fully support all the Institutions of the Baha'i Faith. After a weekend of at times painful, open and frank consultation we have produced, as requested by the National Spiritual Assembly, a list of recommendations. The recommendations that follow were taken from individuals throughout the weekend and refined somewhat in final consultation at the close of the weekend. We wish to emphasize that each of the members who put their name to this letter may not agree with all the details of every suggestion. We respectfully seek your guidance, prayers, and support. As well, we humbly, but honestly offer our own unique perspective for your consultation on this issue.

Extractions: Welcome to ON TRUTH A ministry of Dr. Cky J. Carrigan devoted to Apologetic Evangelism that seeks to equip the saints for the work of evangelism through a rigorous pursuit of TRUTH motivated by LOVE. HOME Two Minutes to Eternal Life My God-Story BREAKING THE BAHA'I CODE: UNDERSTANDING AND EVANGELIZING MEMBERS OF THE BAHAI FAITH By Cky J. Carrigan, Ph.D., July 2000 [Revised 5/2/05] What is the Baha'i Faith? The Baha'i Faith is a young, widely distributed, fast growing, independent world religion that believes in the oneness of God, the oneness of religion and the oneness of humanity, and practices social activism. The Baha'i Faith follows the teachings of Baha'u'llah who is their ultimate prophet and the latest Great Manifestation of God. The Baha'i Faith has historical connections to the Babi religion and Shi'ite Islam but has moved beyond both of these middle-eastern religious traditions. Baha'u'llah, whose title means "glory of God," founded the Baha'i Faith in Persia (modern Iran ) about 150 years ago.
