Everyone, even the non-theist attempts to make sense of and explain the reality around him. While those who believe in some form of God attribute this world's existence in some way to that God (or gods); the atheist, agnostic, and skeptic form an alternative naturalistic explanation for this world. Since our space is limited, we usually will refer to the three views as one, recognizing the great overlap among them. Where their distinctions are important we will point them out. After defining the three terms we will review briefly the history of the non-theist (apart from God) movement. Then we will discuss five kinds of objections which represent most of the arguments brought by nonbelievers against a belief in God. These five objections include problems in the areas of language, knowledge, moral concepts, scientific method, and logic. Since this is to be a survey of non-theistic religions, and not a presentation of Christianity, we will not present systematic proofs for the existence of God, but we will present short theistic resolutions to the five problems mentioned. We have included the names of the major philosophers whose writings would be helpful in understanding these areas of belief.

Most of these people state that there is no God as the Bible teaches, and if there is, He is unknowable. The claims of these alternatives, however, will not hold up under investigation. An agnostic usually is someone who does not know whether God exists. The agnostic has not made up his mind about God. He is a doubter. Some agnostics are more aggressive than others in searching for God, and this we applaud. The Bible promises, if anyone desires to know the truth about God, they shall. "If any man is willing to do His will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or whether I speak from Myself" (John 7:17, NASB). Unfortunately, most agnostics do not make a real effort to know if there is a God. They do not consider the question all that crucial. Yet it is. The very fact that an agnostic cannot be sure makes it logical that he should consider the claims of Christianity. Therefore, agnosticism is not grounds for rejecting Christianity; rather, it is grounds for examining Christianity. Atheists affirm there is no God. Yet they cannot hold this position dogmatically. For a person to be able to make this type of statement with authority, he would have to know the universe in its entirety and to possess all knowledge. If anyone had these credentials, then by definition he would be God.

He feels that modern science, at least "the establishment" of modern science, is blinded by it's own reality tunnel. But is he right? The New Inquisition deals to a certain degree with the philosophy of science. Robert Anton Wilson heavily criticizes the state of the scientific establishment today. He finds his main point of contention in their dogmatic reliance upon already established ideas when judging new work. One of his targets is the Committee for Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal, CSICOP. He claims that they don't give a fair hearing to anyone they don't already agree with. He also feels that the reliance on the military-industrial complex for funding maintains the status quo. Wilson asserts that instead of this dogmatic attitude scientists should employ skepticism, or a sort of agnostic principle, when confronted with new ideas. According to Wilson science these days worships the Idol of Materialism. He calls their underlying belief "Fundamental Materialism" and likens it to religious fundamentalism. Wilson would prefer a principle which "refuses total belief or total denial and regards models as tools to be used only and always where appropriate and replaced (by other models) only and always where not appropriate."
