Extractions: Nobel Prize Winning Chemists William Francis Giauque The Best Prize In Chemistry 1949 William Francis Giauque was born in Niagara Falls, Canada, of U.S. parentage, on May 12, 1895, the first of three children of William Tecumseh Sherman Giauque and Isabella Jane Duncan. He attended public grammar schools principally in Michigan. After graduation he sought employment in various power plants at Niagara Falls for financial reasons and because he had planned for many years to become an electrical engineer and wanted preliminary experience. He was unable to obtain this type of work. He entered the Hooker Electro-Chemical Company. The well-organized operations in this chemical plant, together with problems which he saw in course of the solution, captured his interest and caused him to decide to become a chemical engineer. His interest in the third law of thermodynamics as a field of research was aroused by the experimental work for his Ph. D. research under Professor G. E. Gibson. This work, which was concerned with the relative entropies of glycerine crystals and glass, had its origin in discussions of Professors Lewis and Gibson. He has received the Chandler Medal and the honorary degree of Sc. D. from Columbia University, an honorary LL. D. from the University of California, and the Elliot Cresson Medal from the Franklin Institute. In 1951 he received the Willard Gibbs Medal and in 1956 the Gilbert Newton Lewis Medal. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1949 "for his contributions in the field of chemical thermodynamics, particularly concerning the behavior of substances at extremely low temperatures.

Extractions: Chlorine One of the elements for which Giauque compared Third Law entropy with know spectoscopic data was chlorine. This was presented with T. M. Powell in an article in the Journal of the American Chemical Society titled "Chlorine. The Heat Capacity, Vapor Pressure, Heats of Fusion and Vaporization, and Entropy. In this article Giauque demonstrates his technique for comparing Third Law entropies to those of known spectroscopic data. The final part of this article details the determination of the entropy of chlorine. This may be considered the most fascinating part of this article. For Giauque was able to calculate the entropy of chlorine to within 0.01 cal./K*mole of the known spectroscopic values. Giauque does this by making used of the Maxwell equation (delta S/delta P)constant T = -(delta V/delta T)constant P. This corrected to the ideal gas state of chlorine along with Berthelot's equation of state. Berthelot's equation was the following, delta S = S(ideal) - S(actual) = 27RT(critical)^3P/32T^3P(critical). Year Winner Country* Achievement Hoff van't , Jacobus H Netherlands for work on rates of reaction, chemical equilibrium, and osmotic pressure Fischer, Emil Germany Fischer's research on the purines was instituted in 1881. He determined the structures of uric acid, xanthine, caffeine, theobromine, and other related compounds, and he showed that they are all derivatives of a single compound, a nitrogenous base that he named purine. Despite major complications because of stereochemical relations, Fischer was able to use these derivatives to determine the molecular structures of fructose, glucose, and many other sugars, and he was able to verify his results by synthesizing those compounds. He also showed how to distinguish the formulas of the 16 stereoisometric glucoses. In the course of his stereochemical research, Fischer discovered that there are two series of sugars, the D sugars and the L sugars, that are mirror images of each other. His study of sugars led him to investigate the reactions and substances involved in fermentation, and, in his investigations of how enzymes break down sugars, Fischer laid the foundations for enzyme chemistry.
